Amp to feed B&W Nautilus 801D

Hi,
is there any suggestion for a power amp that can feed B&W 801D. Those are very hungry speakers… so to have a well balanced sound, i think i need something with strength and no shy on current.

Is there any budget suggestion for that?

cheers,

i'd monoblock amp them. 2 monoblocks on the used market would start above 2K i imagine. Lovely speakers. They need juice!

Krell Amps are an excellent partner with 801s

Well, the Nautilus 801 is speced at 90 dB/1W, and should be pretty easy to drive in theory. B & W recommends 50W - 1000W per channel.

OTOH, if you take a look at the measurements here: B&W Nautilus 801 loudspeaker Measurements | Stereophile.com, you will see that there are some pretty nasty impedance dips and phase angles.

Something big and meaty seems to be indicated. Usually that means big and expensive.

Running my 802s with DIY Hypex nCore.
Great combination and unbeatable in the price/value department.

Those amps are tiny but BOY do they have power!

I've run them with Bryston (4B SST2) and Classe. Needs wide scale power.

B&W is the parent company of both Rotel and Classé, and will invariably showcase their speakers with a power amp made by one of those companies. I have been to a couple dozen industry events (trade shows, product debuts, etc.) sponsored by B&W and, despite the fact that Rotel has offered 50 watt or 100 watt amps during all that time, B&W has never seen fit to demo their 800-series speakers with that small a power amp.

Once in a rare while they'll show the smaller bookshelf models (805) with a 125 wpc Rotel. But usually -- and definitely for any of their floorstanding models -- the 800-series gets demo'd with a massive 250wpc model or, more commonly, a big-ass 600 or 1,000 watt monoblock.

801s will sing with a Classé 600 watt amp. They will just sputter with a 50 watt amp.

The best I have heard 800 series B&W speakers was with top of the line Krell amps. Not cheap but it will yield about the best sound available anywhere.
