Wagener Mandatory Gear

Greetings Michael,

I am going to be building my first pro room for myself to work out of. The budget will be about 100k for gear only. I wanted to know if you were to build a new room for yourself from scratch, what gear would you say needed to be there no exceptions?

Thank you in advance for your time and insight,

Eric

more importantly than just a list of gear, try to put a lil blurb next to each item explaining WHY it appears on the list and what it's good for...

With all respect to Michael and the above poster, I do not wish to abuse his kindness. I couldn't agree more referring to his generosity of time and knowledge Michael brings to this forum over and over again. Michael is one of my all time favorite engineers and just want to know if there are some units that if they are not in the room his sonic visions could not be realized without them. Not to say Michael wouldn't figure out another way to make things happen but just go to units that he uses every session without fail because they always have there place. Personal staples if you will. BTW, Michael I love Ogre Tones and the Mix of Testament's Low album.

I think Michael will tell you to avoid all of the following:

Urei 530EQ's... Aweful, make guitars dirty.
Chandler TG1's... bloat sounds something aweful. The germanium series is even worse.
SCA pres... everyone knows all the Neve and API clones are worthless. These are no exception.

Dunno if you are saying this tongue-in-cheek, but Michael was raving about the Germanium Tone in this thread https://www.gearslutz.com/board/showpost....&postcount=102

Well, like I said before, that is somewhat of a long list and obviously almost everything on my current equipment list would be on there because I like it and use it. But let's say if I was renting a studio for a session (not my own) this is some of the stuff I would want to have in there, besides the "normal" equipment that almost every studio has, like a decent headphone system, a reliable instrument tuner etc.

I assume this is for a Rock session and I assume the studio has a great atmosphere and feel to it, enough space and a comfortable recording environment (and a great Sushi place not too far from it). I am basing this on what I use currently in most sessions and what I have used in a session or what I've heard and it made my wish list. I assume further that we have great instruments. Now, in terms of console or DAW, there are too many good choices and combinations. At this time I prefer to work on Nuendo and the Sony R100 consoles, but I wouldn't mind a great analog console in that setup.

Here we go:
First and foremost I would not record or mix without a pair of ADAM S3As, if you can't hear it, you can't fix it.

Now let's start at the source:
Microphones:
besides the standards ( 57s, 58s, Sennheisers etc.)
at least one pair of Royer R-121s !!!
a Royer SF12
a Royer R-122V
a pair of Mojave Audio MA200s
a Shure SM91
a Yamaha Subkick
GrooveTubes Convertible
Beyer M88TG
Schoeps CMC5 with a CK4 capsule
a AKG C451 with a CK1 capsule
a couple of Octava MK219
a Soundelux 251
a Soundelux E47
Neumann K-100 Binaural head
if the lead vocalist is female, a U67 (or Korby 67 or Beyer MC740)
some kind of "old" ribbon mic (RCA, Reslo etc.)
These are the "must be there" mics. If possible I would like to see 4-8 Josephsons 22E, and a Gefell 295

Mic pres:
Chandler TG-2
Chandler Germanium
Chandler TG channel
Chandler LTD-1
Great River MP2NV
Groove Tube VIPRE
SeventhCircleAudio at least 4x A12, 2xN72
GML 8304
a few John Hardy M-1s
Summit DPA-200B
Crane Song Spider
on the "would be great" list: ShadowHills Golden Age mic pre, a pair of Telefunken V76 and, and , and ...

EQ:
Great River EQ2NV
Chandler Germanium Tone control (as many as possible, they also replace the UREI 530s)
Manley Massive Passive
Chandler Curve Bender
on the "would be nice" list: GML 8200, CraneSong IBIS

Compressors:
Chandler TG-1 (as many as possible)
CraneSong STC-8
Chandler LTD-2
at least two Distressors
GrooveTubes Glory Comp
Pendulum PL-2
RidgeFarm Boiler comp
UREI original 1176
original dBx 160 VU
Chandler Zener Limiter
On the "wish list": Shadow Hills compressor

Converters:
Euphonix 703/713 A/M and M/A
Crane Song HEDD
Benchmark DAC-1
There are others (like the UA 2192) but those would be a "must" for me.

Effects/Reverb:
TC M 6000
TC Fireworx
Lexicon PCM-90 (or 480L)
Lexicon PCM-70
Kurzweil KSP-8
Lexicon PrimeTime II/95
Quantec QRS
Marshall 5402

What else?
Little Labs IBP
Little Labs PCP
Latchlake mic stands
Apogee Big Ben
BBE 862
SPL Transient Designer
TC Intonator
a reliable patchbay,
a Z-sys AES patchbay
an Oscilloscope and some test gear
and a computer with SpectraFoo.

and of course the MW1 studiotool heh

We're showing it for the first time at NAMM. There will be info about in on my website as soon as I get around to put it up there after I return from NAMM, don't want to SPAM gearslutz with it.

I think it's totally vital, because I use it on the stereo bus to enhance the overall sound. It's under "converters" in the list, wasn't sure where to list it.

Holy Crap so much for my budget. That is far and away not enough for all that. I do appreciate you sharing this insight with me though. Very informative. Here I thought you were going to list 10 to 15 units lol. Wasn't expecting that.

Thank you soo much for your time again Michael,

Eric

Ggggarth was my assistant on a whole bunch of albums in the mid 80s. He produced Low and I ended up mixing it.

The list is by no means complete, as you know, one can never have too much gear
