Big fan of the ATR/356 card combo lately.
the 351 rules when you need a little exaggerated bigness, swell & boom boom on tracks.kinda like a really nice analog smiley face

Can't remember what I paid for that stupid reel tape thing.
dumb AES show headphone audition impulse buy.
a bad case of "buying the hype".waste of money

Massey is more of a light saturation which is really nice for giving certain tracks a slightly more forward cutting thing in a mix [guitars snare, etc] without sounding too harsh..
I also LOVE the URS saturation plug in.
all in moderation of course.

Anamod is the closest to tape and is great for tracking and mixing.
let's put it this way:our real ATR is on the fritz at the moment and the ATS-1 ATR card is doing a stellar job of replacing it right now.

ATS... realistic, closest to the real thing
Phoenix... subtle sheen / thickening sound from harmonics.. great when used on lots of individual tracks in an additive way
Massey... more of a special effect (I use it on guitar leads sometimes when mixing), more heavy handed saturation.
Reeltape (digi)... pretty much useless if you have the others. Makes things smaller / sort of pinched, even though it does sort of do a tape-ish sound.

Eidt...Ah funny, RB and I just posted at the same time with pretty much the same info...

Ah !!! It seem to be clear !!!!!!!!!!
A big thanks thumbsup for all these precious infos, it's exactly the details i needed.
I should try the Anamod in 2 weeks, it seem that i will probably keep it...heh

Make sure you get the optional cards at the same time, 351, 102 and 111 if possible. The Anamod really comes into it's own with the optional cards.

Yes it will have all the optional cards installed...

Any details on the differences between the cards, and which optional card is a must have ? It will be mainly for mixing and maybe for mastering (or on the master buss in a mix)

Any mods we should know about on your M79? Saki heads? New caps / opamps?

Badge,
i was under the impression Sakis give a 'stiffer' vibe than Flux heads, but whatever your machine has it sounds great.

PS switchable transformers as in in and out, or switchable between 2 different types of xformers? thanks bro.

Ah! It's a keeper.

Maybe get rid of the FET switches if you only use one speed.

interesting Dave.I'll have to look into that.although I use diff ips quite a bit.

also the varispeed on this machine rules for slapbacks and reverb delays

Does anyone know what the 102 card is based on? 1/2 inch 2 track?

Yep... I've used the vari-speed alot. Doesn't affect the switching though. Also... I think they use them for switching between CCIR and NAB but it's been a while since I've fixed one. That would be a good place to eliminate them.

The M56 uses relays for these functions which is probably part of why it sounds so good. They other part is that it doesn't use opamps.

AFAIK, 1/2" 2 track, stock heads (neither flux nor saki); they used several machines and kind of made the 'mother of all 102s' out of all the machines they worked with, but if i'm wrong someone please correct me.

This ATS-1 is really amazing. The first mix I turned in using it on the mix bus got unanimously happy praise from a team that normally say next to nothing (a particular A&R guy and a particular management team). I like to crank the hi bias knob almost all the way, and put the low bias knob around 2 o'clock.... on either the Ampex 351 machine card or the A800 card. Not sure what's in the drinking water at Anamod, but I'll have what they're having.

I listened to your excellent shootout of the real thing and the Anamod - and in every case, I preferred the Anamod.

anamod's business model reminds me a lot of apple...let's make a GREAT product, take out the best function for now, release it and sell these "best" functions for a premium later on or as an Version 2...
for the price of this machine I truly believe that it should come with all the cards included, especially since everyone is saying how they don't even use the stock ones at all and ONLY use the extra cards...I'm planning on checking it out but I just don't like the way they do business, way overpriced, as great as the machine seems to be (and Money is not really a problem for me it's more on the "principle").
Sell me a machine I can use with the best options out the box, don't give me some crappy cards and tell me "oh you wanted the good ones? well you have to pay extra", if the machine was $1200 maybe but at the price they are selling it adding the cost of the extra "must" have cards is exagerated
my 2 cents
