Studer 169 XLR connectors question

There is a nice Studer offered on German eBay:
Studer 169 XLR connectors questionhttp://www.ebay.de/itm/Studer-169-St...item2a57d15756

Does anyone know what´s the deal with the input/output connectors (scroll down in the auction for pics)? Why are male XLR connectors used for input and female XLR´s for output?

Not sure that´s the case, I remember seeing other Studer mixers on e-bay with similar XLR orientation. Anyone knows if Studer manufactured them like this and why?

It is the old norm. Imagine when we would use the Cannon XLR norm using 110V / 230V outlets, you would burn your fingers. There it comes from. Many broadcasters have had there own norms, the Dutch NRU/NOS used male connectors on equipment and stageblocks and all cables were only fitted with female connectors. One of the reasons was the small metal locks of the female chassis plugs were breaking off when used on the stage blocks.
