Cant Sleep After Recording Sessions!

Hey guys, just wondering if others suffer from this. I work as a freelance producer/engineer for a living, therefore tracking about 3 days a week and mixing for the rest of the days.

I find I can never sleep after recording sessions as im so highly strung and thinking about the session/song, especially if we have another day of tracking the day after ie planning ahead.

The general answer would be to have a couple of beers but I find alcohol just stimulates me more. I meditate regularly and do yoga daily but this still doesnt help me sleep.

Im wondering if im alone in this or if people have any advice.

Cheers!!

it can be hard to wind down after a session. especially if it was a big gig.

for me, i found i found Indian or Thai or Lebanese food at 1.30am, helped a lot.

did many years of that. home at 2.30am and asleep by 3.00am.

young mans gig though.

For me it's a hot shower, and limited screen time. And silence.

Hi Pal,

Do you smoke Cigarettes? This could most certainly be a huge clue to the anxiety and stress.. If not, Not too sure. other than maybe you just absolutely love what you do and it stays on your mind constantly. Thats very normal. I wish I had a fix for it too as I think constantly about 12 things at once and I can never sleep either!

Completely understand. If you can go home and just fall in the rack, you're done. Hope I never get that way.

Take some Melatonin. It's natural and you'll fall asleep fast.

Story of my life :D

I feel you, I have insomnia runs for like 4-5 days in a row, sometimes up to 10, with some 3-4 hours naps every second day, when I basically pass out...

I can't sleep after mixing sessions, and unlike you when you are with recording artists and musicians, I'm alone on my sessions in the comfort of my home studio...

So, I made a decree that I thought I couldn't, I stopped mixing after 5pm, as of today , I'll see how's that going to play out...

I did wrote a thread recently about anxiety while waiting clients' feedback on mixes, but I think I didn't express myself well (sorry english is not my native language), because I definitely meant on whole music thing and anxiety and insomnia... Funny thing is, when I was on vacation, I slept like a dead man, so, it's definitely connected to mixing, and mixing late...

Mister 7+1 gave pretty much a similar response to my thread, and I agree, that means you do care about your stuff...

As a recording engineer, I guess, you probably can't choose exactly when to record, but I think for me, that staying away from music last ~5hrs of a day could save me from insomnia.

I don't have any practically advice on how to relax yourself and let yourself slide to sleeping, but maybe a hot bath for relaxing ( I do plan to buy one with all hydro massage mumbo jumbo...) and a book before bed could turn your thoughts away... I'm an epic fantasy fan, so I like some escapism before bed, it does help me... But when I mix 16-17 hours to meet the deadlines, no trick can help me, and I'm running into non-sleeping period immediately, also no medications are helping me, I could drink every sleeping pill I can lay my hands on it and nothing happens...

Stay healthy,

Cheers
