To those who have tinnitus, did it worsened over years ?

Hi ! I have tinnitus, and I live ok with it.

It is not LOUD, but it is not really quiet either. It is there.

So, I still have a fear that it worsen over time. I would like to know from your experience, if it has worsening over years.

And if yes, why ?

Thanks !

Mine has, subjectively speaking, gotten better. It took somewhere between 3 and 5 years for noticeable improvement, might have been subtle improvement after 2 years but it's difficult to say.

I say "subjectively" because I'm not convinced it's quieter and the volume fluctuates anyway, leading me to believe it may just be I've adjusted to it being there and so it is less noticeable. Still constantly audible unless listening to (most) music, though. We don't have proper understanding of where it comes from - latest I've read is they think the brain creates the noise itself rather than being directly due to physical damage. If this is true then it may be the volume is in fact changing.

It is very unlikely to worsen unless you have a repeat of the circumstances which caused it. Even then it's not certain. Mine definitely has not gotten worse even though I have been reckless and exposed myself to loud music on multiple occasions since - usually I wear earplugs but not always.
