difference btwn tape/disk automation

anyone know the exact definitions of tape based automation and disk based automation? any examples thereof? etc....

The oldest automation systems I know of used a pair of tracks on the 24 track machine (typically tracks 1 and 24) to "store" the automation info. As you did updates, you would print to 1 then 24 then 1 then you did update passes.

Later systems used SMPTE code on a track (typically 24) that provided location info into the "computer".
