Noisy Tube-Tech Mec1a. Need help

Hey guys. Just bought a used Tube-tech mec1a. Sounded great at first but when its on and recording it will all of a sudden turn the level of my input or output up super loud and it will sound choppy and heavilydistorted. It can last up to thirty seconds of interference and as little as 1 second bursts of interference. It will then go back to normal levels. Any ideas what's causing this? Any ideas or feedback is appreciated.

What functions are you using when it happens? Try bypassing the Eq and comp if you're using them and see if it stops. That will at least help narrow it down. If you can't sort it out, I can look at it for you. I have worked on quite a bit of Tube Tech gear and have a good relationship with them.
best,
Ike

Hey Ike ..

Ive tried bypassing both Eq and Compressor, but it's still giving me the problem. I've found someone locally here in Ottawa available to service the unit. Given this is your area of expertise and you've serviced tube tech gear in the past I would have definitely went to see you had you been in Ottawa. All this considering, if I don't get good service here in Ottawa you'll be the first guy I contact. I checked out your website and you seem to have a lot of experience in this specific field (analog recording equipment) whereas the guy im going to see has a more broad range of repairs (guitars, amps etc..) I would personally much prefer a specialist considering the cost of the unit. Ill let you know what happens.
Thanks for your help,

Josh

Thanks for the kind words, Josh. As this is a tube piece, the first thing to check is a tube. Could be in the mic pre or the output stage (if it doesn't respond to any of the controls it's probably the latter).

So just an update on the unit. I ended up contacting Ike Zimbel Audio in Toronto Canada and he fixed it up really quick and its working great. I was going to go with someone locally to avoid having to ship it off, but with expensive equipment i wanted to give it the best care possible and the attention to detail and help Ike gave me was remarkable. I'd highly recommend this company to anyone. Thanks Ike.

Thanks for the plug, Josh. For the record, all that was wrong with this unit was that it was WAY out of calibration (well, I did re-seat the tubes, too). I have seen this before, where someone buys a used, "working" piece of Tube Tech gear off e-bay and then has this kind of trouble with it when it arrives. I suspect that if the gear comes from a room where it's been on 24/7 that the drift in calibration is so gradual that it's not noticed, and then gets real obvious after having been turned off and shipped somewhere. It also makes me wonder if people are selling this stuff because they're "not feeling it anymore" when all it really needs is a good calibration to shine like new.
Best,
Ike
