What does a broken pre-amp on a mixing desk sound like?

Hi,
I think one of the pre-amps on my desk might be broken.
Can you tell me what one would sound like if I plugged a vocal mic into it?
Thank you

There are multiple potential preamp failure modes.

1. noisy. Actually this is two, one fault is just added hiss, another fault is hiss and hum if output pegs to a rail.

2. no output at all

3. distorted output

If the preamp sound different than the others in the same console, something is wrong.
