how do you make a mic directional?

Hey all;

This is something I've been wondering for a long time, and since I'm thinking about modding a mic I have, I thought I'd ask:

How does a mic have a cardioid (or super or figure 8 or whatever) pattern? Is it in the design of the element itself, or do all mics start out being omni and use some type of circuitry to make them reject sound from the back? Or some type of baffling system inside the element or case itself?

Thanks
