problem with distorted recording-help!!

I am frustrated and hope you can help. I plug into my fast track ultra and it sounds great. But when I hit the red record button on the fader the sound turns from nice acoustic guitar to a distorted weird sound. The gain is not too high, the level is not red lining it's just distorted sounding, but when I turn the red record button on the fader off then it sounds great. But of course I need the red button to be on in order to record.

My laptop: Dell Inspiron E1705
Windows XP
Intel Core 2CPU 1.73 GHZ
2.00 GB of RAM
M-Audio Fast Track Ultra
Pro-Tools M-Powered 8

Your help would be greatly appreciated!

are you monitoring the source through the recording program somehow?

redo your monitor routing in the m-audio control panel.
