Analog Audio Power Supplies

I am in the process of testing and performing any needed repairs on my analog audio gear. Power Amps, Compressors, etc. What I would like to do is buy replacement parts in bulk (resistors, capacitors, diodes, etc.). I'm questioning whether "generic" parts would work in all the gear as they are obviously from different manufacturers. I guess what I'm looking for would be a "kit" that I can put together and have on hand for each time a repair is necessary. Can anyone share any information they may have on this subject? Rock on!

While I have a large selection here in Ye Olde Shoppe, I bought these resistor kits to cover maybe 90% of what I encounter "in the field":

Digi-Key - RS125-ND (Manufacturer - Q15703)

Digi-Key - RS225-ND (Manufacturer - Q17447)

Digi-Key - RS150-ND (Manufacturer - Q17520)

Digi-Key - RS250-ND (Manufacturer - Q17894)

Note that covers only 1/4 and 1/2 Watt resistors at 5% tolerance, and only up to 1 Megohm. I added a few common values above 1 Meg (IIRC, 2.2M, 3.3M, 4.7M).

Of course, resistors are also available in 1W, 2W, etc, and tight tolerance (1%), so my kit certainly doesn't cover every possibility.

As for caps, I built my own kit of high quality (low impedance, 105 degree C) electrolytics rated at 50VDC, in a "stair step" of capacitance:

1uF, 2.2 uF, 4.7 uF, 10 uF, 22 uF........etc etc through ....220 uF, 470 uF, 1000 uF.

That sequence covers the majority of electrolytics I encounter, but again, caps can run well above 1000 uF, and in some applications, require higher voltage ratings than 50 VDC.

Smaller caps (ie, below 1 uF) are a nightmare to inventory, but typically they are pretty reliable. I carry a random assortment of those stuffed in a ziplock bag <g>.

Beyond that, I have a collection of diodes (1N4007, IN914), opamps (TL072, TL074, 5532, 5534), regulators (7805, 7905, 7815, 7915, 7824), various NPN and PNP transistors.

I made some "educated guesses" about what I may require for field service, based on ...egads...almost 40 years of experience. So, I am playing the odds that I have something useful when I'm 100's/1000's of miles away from Ye Shoppe! Otherwise, I'd need a semi/tractor-trailer to carry every possibility!

Oh yes...I also carry a large assortment of fuses...fast and slow blow...3AG and metric sizes.

Best,

Bri

Thumbs up

Hi
Some 10 K resistors, a couple of '741 op amps, a 10uf capacitor and a big hammer it will then fix anything!
OK, follow Brian's plan!

LOL Matt...I think you understand my "modus operandi"!

Often, I'm in a location where Radio Shack is the ONLY "resource".....siiiigh.

Hence, I carry the most common parts and hope I am "OK"!

Best,

Bri

Dear Kirby,

Well, at least the Digikey resistor assortments will stock PART of your Shoppe.

Best (and Merry Christmas),

Bri
