Clip sounds good.

Running both pre's in tandem like seems to have captured the Larrivee tone nicely. I have found that gain structuring is important when I use two preamps like that.

Love to hear a stereo track of the same riff with the BG-1/AT4050 and the Ampex/SM58.

A bit off topic, but noticed the TAB-Funkenwerk upgraded SM58's and SM57's at Mercenary. Wonder if anyone has tried these or if they'd just go for an SM7?

As far as more sample clips, really having a rough time getting my system set up
for any meaningful workflow and still not really grasping the proper way to work in Poortools M-Powered.

The old girl is acting up a bit this morning. Snap Crackle Pop, comes and goes.

Aha! seems that it might be the new I/O jack just not properly mounted yet.
(waiting for a proper mount plate they're making up for me at Pro-Type Industries
in Sterling.)

Just barely moved it and the noise stopped!

Ampex-Larrivee-SM58beta test

OK this probably sounds like cow pies to you pros but dag nabbit it took me hours
just to blindly go where no man has gone before....in this basement.

SM58Beta-Ampex-M-Audio PMIO- PoorTools M-Powered.

This was Way TF too hard to do!

I'm sure with more care about mic placement and refined balance between the Ampex output and the PMIO input into M-Powered, I could have made this cut considerably warmer.

No secret I'm a technophobic illiterate when it comes to this stuff.
At least making some progress.

I upped this demo to Soundclick for those like me who are still on dial-up and just want
to stream it.

Start Player

Still amazed at the results for a live mono track using a standard SM58 beta.

I have no idea how the demo track sounds to those of you with fine tuned hearing and way better monitoring.

To me it sounds brighter in the left speaker and not as crisp in the right speaker.

It's odd because it's a mono track, so I can only guess it's my system playing tricks on me.

Since I was recording in typical adverse conditions, having to cut off the heat pump
etc, the room temp dropped enough to knock the guitar a bit out of tune.

At 3:00 AM I stopped caring.

The Ampex certainly added life and showed me that I can get vocals way out front
with this system.

Here for the gear

ampex preamps

I just had my amazing tech set up my 601 preamp and it is great - there is so much junk in the chassis from the tape section that removing all that really helps. I have a 400 chassis that I am restoring but can tell you that without someone who really knows what they are doing.....The guys on the internet don't know, so if you want it done right for cheap let me know and I WILL send you his contact - he is in Eugene

your amazing tech could have left in the
"junk in the chassis from the tape section"
and converted that portion of the circuitry to a high impedance DI
(of course defeating the equalisation),
in addition to the existing mic pre and line inputs.
