Filament transformers

I've seen alot of old tube products that utilize separate filament and B+ transformers.

what is the reason for this? is there an advantage to keeping the two separate?

I've read a few blurbs here and there saying that there is no real world advantage, but that just begs the question, why were they/are they produced?

I imagine that it was mostly a matter of standard trannies.

Why use a custom wound tranny when you can order two standard ones instead? The cost is largely tied up in the copper and not the steel.

I talked to a friend, whose opinion I respect very much. he told me that having a separate filiment transformer isolates the filiment supply and keeps the switching noise from rectifiers from finding their way into the filiment supply.

although he also said that transformers were alot cheaper then than they are now.
