What goes on inside a 002?

What exactly happens to an analog audio signal upon entering a 002 through inputs 5-8 at +4. Does the 002 process the analog audio signal in any way before A/D conversion?

I think you are asking "why does it sound so different when I record through my 002?". technically there is no "processing" but technically there is a few points where they can let the "suck" in. there will be a buffer amp and coupling capacitor to isolate it from the outside world. quite a bit of suck gets in here. then it would go straight to the left/ right inputs on the 2 channel A/D. the quality of this device can add layers of suck as well. But there probably isnt any EQ or compression added to ruin your stellar tracks going in, its just cheap design and/or implementation.

The A/D converters typically handle a maximum peak to peak level of just under 5 volts (maybe 3.3 Volts) and the audio input would be around 30 Volts peak so needs scaling down. The converter also needs to 'see' a very low source impedance so an 'amplifier' is necessary. This can be implemented with cheap parts or very high grade expensive ones. Whether it picks up crosstalk of either audio or any of the various 'clocks' will also have a bearing on the overal quality.
How it is mashed by the digital processing after this will also have a significant impact. All clocks must be stable with very low jitter and isolated from each other (not interacting) to enable the best overal performance. This is not easy in a cramped box.
