Shure SM86 loose wire/contact

At least that's how it sounds.

Bought it used and didn't pay enough attention.

Anyone repaired one of those?

Is that a common problem?

Tricks?

I know a little soldering. A little.

Thanks.

I replaced the cartridge in my SM7 as my first soldering job, and it turned out to be not that hard.

Personally, I would open it up to see what was what to assess whether there was anything obvious like a loose mechanical connection that I may be able to fix first.

Obvs, my mic is dynamic, so not sure (no pun intended) if there is anything you need to watch out for with those condensers.

Probably not all that helpful, s hopefully someone more experienced will chip in!

Cheers

Thanks, I guess I'll just solder away.

Note to self: Shake the mic next time you buy one.

Take the grille off. Every time.

With regards to the soldering, if it's the wire to the capsule, I've seen similar. Work quickly so the heat doesn't spread and damage the capsule.

If you're in the UK and want someone else to do it, give me a shout. It'll be cheaper than a decent XLR cable.
