Strange noise on Multivox Echo

Hello to everyone,
I have just acquired a Multivox MX-201 for a very good price from a local classified ads website. Everything looks and seems to work pretty much perfectly, and I'm quite confident that once I change the tape loop it'll run brilliantly. For now, because of the tape's age and condition (it is litteraly shredding apart), the echo is a bit muddy and won't allow for self-oscilation - you can tell it's reaching for it but the final output is muddy and distorted.
I do have a technical inquiry however.
Although the device is normally rather quiet, recently a loud sort of regular hum has been coming from it. I'd tend to describe it as "hoarse" if that makes sense. I'm not talking about what comes out of the output, it's rather a mechanical sound that can be heard when turning on the device. It stops if the machine is slightly tilted backwards, and it sometimes, for no apparent reason, cannot be heard upon switching on. It sounds like an element of the mechanism could be slightly loose and rubbing against some other part. I can cleary hear that playing with the echo time knob changes the speed of the motor (on that chapter the response is solidly consistent) but has no effect on the unwanted sound so I don't think it's the motor. Also, I'm not quite sure whether this noise is merely the amplification of something that can normally be heard on lower lovel, of if its appearance itself is a quirk.

Thanks and hope someone will be of help about this slightly less common echo machine...
