Mpc 60 8 bit dac ?

Can I swap the akai MPC60’s IC, PCM54HP 16-bit D/A converter, with a 8-bit d/a converter.

Like if I wanted the MPC60 to be 8-bit would could it be that simple?

You can probably use the existing chip. Cut the leads going to pins 11-18 and bus those pins (on the chip) to (its own) pin 22 (, i.e., 'common'). Then the nice, Burr-Brown 16 bit parallel-input DAC will be operating with just the 8 Most Significant bits of data. ...pushing Square?

Convert the file to MP3 and you will get only 4 bits. Why is the question.

It will sound horrible, far worse than you're imagining. It you want to make it an 8 bit sampler, disconnect (and pull high or whatever) the 4 lowest bits of the waveform memory. Although this may cause it to crash. Or just load 8 bit samples.
