Valve Mic Noise Problems

Hi All!

Anyone know much about valve mic repair/service?

I have a fairly inexpensive valve mic that has developed a rumbling hum, like a mixture of wind noise, thunder, and mains hum. I figured it was the valve and had a good quality replacement sent over from Watford Valves. The new valve has slightly changed the tone of the noise (because its a different valve i guess) but its still there. Anyone have any pointers on what could be the cause? i'm pretty handy at fixing gear but i'm always reluctant to dive into areas i know little about without getting some advice first.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

R

Could be a moisture issue. Do you use a wind screeen or sock when using the mic? Do you store it in a cool dry place? Try storing some silica packets ( like they use for shipping) in the mics bag or storage case. Beyond that I would look for a qualified tech.

thanks for the tip, but it's rarely used for vocals, and when it is i always use a pop shield. its stored at room temperature in a dry environment and with a silica bag in the case, so i doubt its moisture,

i would take it to a tech for repair but all the ones i can find are specialists and seem to (quite understandably) charge a fortune, which is ok if you have a U67 or C12 but when its a cheaper mic the cost doesnt seem justifiable.

thanks all the same though, appreciate your reply.
