AKM converters and de-emphasis in MX-2424

anyone have experience with AKM DACs and de-emphasis?

I have an MX-2424.. enough said right? even with the newest AKM ADC it sounds like a towel is over the microphone. I've installed some super fast opamps which have helped ever-so-slightly but still has that towel over the mic sound.

bypassing the mx-2424 and tracking straight to the mixdown computer sounds just fine but going through the mx sounds muffled and boomy.

anyone think that there is a chance the de-emphasis could be ON by mistake?

there is definately something wrong but I can't put my finger on it yet..

input and output caps were removed, helped very little.
opamps were exchanged, helped a little.

about to try directly connecting the ADC to the input and using the digital HPF instead of the analog circuit as well as seeing if the de-emphasis is ON normally.

If that does nothing then I am sure there is a problem in the actual digital processing.
