Tom Mic Comparison: Sennheiser MD 421-II and CAD m177

The Sennheiser MD 421 is known as one of the industry standard mics for toms, and the CAD m179 has recently become a popular, less expensive, alternative in that application. This is a comparision between the MD 421-II and the CAD m177 (the discontinued cardioid only brother of the m179). I find both mics useful for toms and the differences are subtle. I hear more transient "snap" with the 421 and more "tone" with the CAD. The bleed from the 421 sounds more tight, focused, with more upper midrange emphasis and the bleed from the CAD sounds more open with more extended highs and lows. Take a listen for yourself!
