Field Recorders - Sony PCM-D50 & Zoom H2n

A buddy loaned me a Sony PCM-D50 so I put it up alongside my new Zoom H2n to create some comparison clips. I added the Zoom H2 since it was laying around, then put up a Rode NT4 through the Echo Audiofire Pre8 as a reference track.

Here's the YouTube clip showing the process, the comparison clips are at the end: Field Recorder Comparo - Sony PCM-D50 & Zoom H2n - YouTube

Here's the blog post at Homebrewed Music: http://www.homebrewedmusic.com/2011/...-d50-zoom-h2n/

And here are the level matched, same performance sample clips:

Thanks for posting this. How would you describe the difference in usability between the Sony and Zoom units?

Feelwise, the D50 is carved from metal, the H2n is stamped from plastic.

The D50 has lots of dedicated switches, so once you know where everything is and how it should be set for different situations, it's easier to make changes on the fly.

The D50 has a wider gain range for external mics and line in connections, it's easy to overload the H2n line in even with the gain on its lowest setting.

The H2n uses SDHC cards, much more economical than the Sony memory stick. But the D50 comes with 4 GB so for many uses it will not need extra memory.

As a self-recording solo acoustic guitarist I prefer the H2n form factor - I put it on a flat surface with the metering facing me. On the D50 I need a stand, and the meters are facing away from me.

For someone with a different use in mind the preference might go the other way.

Very cool - thanks! These were the two units I've kind of narrowed it down to. Might just buy 'em both and return the one I like least.
