Omni SDC on piano: DPA - Earthworks - Josephson - Sanken - Schoeps - Studio Projects

I am not the author of this test. The original files are available from this page of the Formation supérieure aux métiers du son (FSMS), a French high-school for sound engineers linked to the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris (scroll down and look for the link entitled les sons de piano). I extracted short clips the RMS level discrepancies of which I compensated.
Enjoy!
Same clips in 24bit - 48kHz wav.

Thank you! This is an interesting comparison, but I need some more listening before I make any comment.

Thanx again!

Didier,

I downloaded the 24/48 files and listened several times, going back and forth comparing each example. Here's my preferences:
1)Sanken
2)Schoeps
3)Josephson
4)DPA
5)Earthworks
6)Studio Projects

Note that the Studio Projects example was not listed with the 24/48 files.

The Sanken just seemed the most 3D to me. The Schoeps was wonderful, and a little surprising (although I shouldn't be) considering the company. The last 8-10 seconds was the most revealing to me in terms of clarity, and that being there feeling.

Thanks for these!

Brian

Thank you Brian for your comment. For me the most beautiful sound here is delivered by the Josephson. I agree that the Sanken is impressive also.
I will upload the missing Studio Projects file later on.

Thanks for pointing to and uploading these high quality piano recording samples!

I really liked the DPA 4006. Maybe not as brilliant [or hard] when hitting transient peaks as some of the others, but they had a full coherent piano sound that I liked..!

Anyhow they all sound good, because the piano and room sounds good. My french is bad but I would like to know what stereo technique was used and what room and piano!

Can you help Didier?

Not much because there are no many details about these takes except some pictures. Since these mics are omni, it shall be AB. It sounds like a close AB somewhere inside the rim curve. Its is only said that the mics were tested on piano, drums and viola de gamba (wav files available from the same FSMS internet page). The mics were put together in 4 groups according to their prices. The DPA 4006 was also present in each group as a reference.
  • group 1 : (DPA 4006), Studio Projects C4, Oktava Mk012, Rode NT55
  • group 2 : (DPA 4006), Audix SCX-One, Avenson STO-2, Microtech Gefell M296
  • group 3 : (DPA 4006), Mojave MA-100, Earthworks QTC30, Charter Oak M900
  • group 4 : (DPA 4006), Josephson C617, Schoeps Mk5, Sanken CO-100k
I suspect that these were variable geometry groups because the Mojave MA-100 and the Charter Oak samples are Beethoven concerto clips unlike the Earthworks sample. Anyway the finalists from the 4 groups were Studio Projects, Avenson, Eathworks and Josephson: excellent result for the USA!
A pity that there was no Neumann...

Thanks - looks like 35-45 cm A-B and as the pictures revealed a slight opening angle. You're probably right about the placement.
[Pity they don't reveal a little more about the technique and instrument used]

Recording and monitoring: SSL Axiom MT, Pyramix, Genelec 1035.

The instrument is likely a Steinway D because there are several ones available at CNSM (Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique).

It is mentioned that one can get a DVD with all the sessions and pictures of the takes by request to Cyrille Métivier, +33 6 11 69 61 69, cyrille.metivier »at »fsms-paris.com.

I went back and downloaded all the .wav files from the link that Didier provided. I downloaded the piano and viola de gamba files, and compared them all listening through Sennheiser HD595 headphones.
Since the download included other, cheaper mics that were not posted above, I was very curious to hear the differences. For the most part, my initial impressions remain with a few exceptions:
1) The Studio Projects and Charter Oak files were by far the least pleasing in my opinion (although certainly not bad).
2) I was VERY impressed with the Audix SCX-1 on both piano and viola de gamba. Was anyone else that listened impressed with this mic?
3) I liked the Sanken better on piano than viola de gamba. It sounded a little thin or anemic on viola de gamba.

My overall winners were the Audix and Schoeps. I felt they provided the best balance with all qualities that I could expect from a mic.
This was a wonderful little treasure trove of mic samples! Thanks again for the link, Didier!

going back to the piano samples, I think I preferred the Josephson. Simply because the high piano notes really rung out with icepick clarity.

The DPA sounded a little dull from that point of view.

I can imagine other people holding the exact opposite point of view for entirely understandable reasons.

For that particular piece of music, on that particular piano, played by that particular pianist, in that particular room, I think the brighter sound worked better. So I liked the Josephson, Schoeps, Sanken and Earthworks.

Let me recall that, as a contrary to other piano samples that I have uploaded on Gearslutz, I am not the author of these ones recorded in a French high school forming sound engineers (see first post).

To me:

winner: DPA4006
tied 2.place:Josephson and Earthworks

I somehow found the sound of Sanken to be strange and not natural-sounding.
The Schoeps sounded too brilliant to my ears, I wonder why is that so?
The C4 is ok, not being overly nothing, mediocre but in a good way.

1
DPA in another league against the others. They are told clinical...i would say a lot more accurate than the others.
2
josephson, very good, second place after DPA
3
schoeps, in this recording strangely it appears to me glassy sound.
4
Earthwork, for me they are a false sound, overall in the high frequencies.
5
sanken and studio project
sanken, same as earthwork, but also worse.
studio project, very dull sound, a clarly cheap capsule.

There is no Microtech Gefell mic. There is a C6717, a Josephson mic fitted out with a M 221 capsule from Microtech Gefell.

Maybe I am confused,

Group 2 appears to have a pair of Microtech Gefell M296 up there in that photo of mic's. Maybe I am missing the correlation of the real shootout and that photo or something else. I'm kinda tired from working all night...

Anyway, no biggie...I just love the M296, it haunts my dreams. Gonna go dream about them now

Is there any possibility to have all the samples in WAV uploaded to this thread? They are no longer available on the original site, as it seems.

I'm sorry for not being clear enough! These downloads did indeed work. I was writing about the original site (the music school site) with all the additional downloads. If anyone has them, and is allowed to make an upload, that would be great!

The files were on a file sharing site that unfortunately keeps any file with a limited duration. I have got only the piano files.

Two more recordings. Maestro Fiorella Bonetti. The arph is a precious instrument early 1900s Erard. 100% Josephson C617, Sound Devices 744t, with the natural reverb of the church.
