Hi!

I now did the test again on the Sonifex RB-ADDA using 110 ohm cables for the AES/EBU. Again using the Motu 896HD to connect to the computer.

I found this DeEmphasis switch and want to know if it is less or more transparent with it engaged.

The link to the original given in the list of results for performing DA-AD loopback test does not work any longer. I don't know why. The other links to loopback files seem still valid (I have tested only a few of them). Here below the new instructions for performing the test :

For contributing to this test :
- download the test 2 x 44 kHz x 24 bit wav file (31 MB),
- cable link the 2 DAC outputs to 2 ADC inputs,
- play back the test file to the DAC outputs and record from the ADC inputs,
- upload to mediafire or any other file sharing site the 2 x 44 kHz x 24 bit wav file from this recording and
- provide the download link here with information about ADC and DAC identities.

'Difference' indicates RMS level figures measured in Wavelab from the difference file delivered by Audio DiffMaker.
'Difference*' indicates RMS level figures got from a difference file generated in Matlab after refining the time offset and gain figures provided by Audio DiffMaker in order to get the lowest difference level. Hence the 'Difference*' figures are lower than the 'Difference' figures.

Hey there! I have a few questions about this test... There are a lot of great sounding converters that are showing "middle of the pack" performance based on the current available test data. The other thing I'm noticing is the generational leap from UAD Apollo to the Apollo X units, actually has the Apollo X units performing (according to this methodology of testing) in a worse manner.

We all know for a fact that specs don't always tell the entire story when it comes to sonics, and in addition to that, at the highest end of conversion much of the differences become subjective, because none of them are painting an ugly sonic picture!

What measurable factors, manufacturing/design choices would lead to a worse performing result from this specific measurement, but an over all more sonically pleasing (albeit personal preference) converter?

Here's an example, I currently own a Red 8 series, and as it's well known the conversion quality of these units does not measure up with the likes of a Hilo. With that being said I had the Hilo for a period of time and I also own the Dangerous AD+ and a modified Lucid 88192. I personally preferred the D/A of the 8 Pre over the Hilo, now I'm sure many will tell me I'm insane, however; there was simply something to it that worked better for my ears, when clocked to the Dangerous unit, it further cleans up the stereo image to me. This by no means is in anyway saying the Hilo is a sub par unit, it is indeed fantastic by all rights. Another example would be Burl units, they are designed to shape the sound that passes in and out of them.

With that in mind, both the Hilo and the 8 Pre use Parallel Summing of conversion, yet show a significant difference in this particular test. It's just confusing to me when part of why people are buying converters is how they clip when pushed to hard, at what point do the "specs" stop being the prevailing factor of an "excellent" converter?

As has been said many times, many ways, the converters at the top of the list, 1st category, are most accurately converting, meaning you work upstream of the converter to shape/enhance the sound.

Opposite of this, many converters shape/enhance the sound, are not accurately converting but, are often selected to shape and enhance.

If it is accurate conversion you seek, look at the top of the list. If shaping/enhancement are desired, you’ll need to listen to converters, pick your sound(s) as the test data is focused on conversion accuracy.

Regarding useful data from the results and gauging the amount of difference; my own recording journey started as an experiment with a Zoom H6 (H4 in results). My other gear improved, I was angry that my recordings sounded like crap vs what I was hearing from the recording chain. I moved to a used Lynx 16 which was literally night and day, now my recordings matched what I was hearing. Upgraded to the Lynx (n) which is worth every cent, better yet but, not as extreme as night and day vs the older Aurora.

Personally, I would love to see where JCF and Radar fall as they are revered, shaping/enhancing converters. If my philosophy changes from shaping/enhancing upstream, I’ll pick up JCF converters.

Yes, I swap L and R channels for testing, as said in my reply to the submission from davidbayles, but kept the link to his inverse stereo file in the list of results. My bad !
I just have changed the link to the correct stereo file.

No problem, thanks for doing this! Very interesting. I have the ones I'm interested in levelmatched in Logic. It was actually easyier than I thought to hear differences. Later on this week I will do some listnening tests on a fullrange speakers in a room with good acoustics and also a blindtest with my colluege.

I'm still looking for someone who can do a test with Orion 32 gen3 but no luck. Very curious to see if their conversion has improved since older units. The specs do look good.

I'm really sorry I haven't done this. I'm literally in the throes of written and oral exams for the PhD, military retirement, and getting ready to move the family (while searching for the best place to live and work for us, etc.).

When I do get a chance to work with music, I've been mixing and concentrating on creative stuff - this "test stuff" isn't very compelling to me at the end of the day.

Again, sorry I didn't get this done. it might yet happen, but at this point I don't want to (again) promise something I have little chance of delivering.

I'm interested in this as well. I'm trying to decide if it is worth making the jump from my Motu 16a the the Orion 32HD Gen 3. Obviously it would give me more inputs/outputs which I do need. I'm curious about the conversion quality though. I could just get another used Motu 16a much cheaper for the same number of inputs/outputs if the conversion difference is negligible.

See if you can get someone to do the test. I've been asking around but no luck so far.

I've doing a lot of serious listnening tests with files from this test. I've been comparing the lynx aurora n with antelope studio, pure 2, motu 16, motu 24 i/o ( since that's the one I've got right now ) and I must say that there's not som much difference except for the lynx. It's just a whole other league.

I'll ask around but unfortunately I don't know anyone that owns one. I need to try out the listening test you mentioned. Lynx is on my list but I'd have to make some compromises in terms of input/output count to purchase it.

Yes the link to Original2.wav at the beginning of the list of results does not work in all previous issues of the list of results. Very strange. I have edited the last issue of the list of results. It is OK now.

Hi, well I must revise what I wrote earlier. The aurora n sounds really good BUT when I listened closer with comparisons to the original I realised that the aurora isn't that transparent. It's doing something with the sound. What it does might be good but It's not a perfect copy of the original.

It really stands out to the others I compared with but wether it's a good thing or not could be discussed.

I'm gonna do another listening test soon and check things again but at the moment I'm leaning towars getting a Orion 32 gen3 mostly because the Aurora n cant handle +24dBu as input level.

Great test Didier!

Way more scientific than what usually happens on Gearslutz which is "this doesn't match what I think I heard" blah blah.

It's a very simple test, love it. People on here can't bear that something they bought might not perform the way they'd prefer.

Looks like for using hardware inserts Lynx n would be a good copy of what you've already tracked. Burl for tracking to impart vibe but after that you want it to stay intact. This test is a good endorsement for that if that's what you're after.

How/where are you finding this info? I'm just looking at the specs. Curious.

Yes, for most people that ain't a problem but since I use a lot of analog tape recorders, not having enough headroom, creates a lot of problems for me.
