Both the Moto X 2nd Gen and the Rocketfish device supposedly have the apt-x codec

Sweet, thanks.

I must say I'm reasonably impressed by those results given the meager $50 price of that rocketfish bluetooth receiver.

I have since created another variant that actually would potentially qualify for inclusion in your list.

In this case, the sequence is:

original2.wav--> google play on Moto X 2nd Gen->bluetooth OTA to rocketfish BTR315 bluetooth receiver-->analog out of BTR315 to MOTU 828 MKII analog in where MOTU 828 MKII is being clocked by optical out of rocketfish BTR315.

The file is here:

https://app.box.com/s/85m1wbjzkvd5dqsdpgpud2pvn6fdyj3e

This won't be quite as good I'm sure since I have now included the BTR315 DAC in the mix, but I don't think it's too bad, either.

Same link and same file name original2outmotoxbtoothinhiloopticalsynclock.wav
like the previous one. Isn't it the same file ?

It is a mix of converters and codecs. There is not yet such a category in this test.

What would cause the right channel to cancel better in 90% of converters tested here?

The right channel is lower in level than the left in the source file.
also, the content on both channels is not the same.

Hi, I've just tested Focusrite Saffire 6i6 MK2.

I've went TRS from Output 1+2 to TRS in Input 3+4 (according to the specs, both have a maximum or +16dbU), with the monitor knob at maximum.

Saffire 6i6 recorded file: Box
Audio DiffMaker difference file: Box
Audio DiffMaker output: parameters: 29usec, 1.160dB (L), 1.221dB (R)..Corr Depth: 14.3 dB (L), 15.8 dB (R)

I don't have Wavelab, but I've used RX6 to calculate the RMS levels of the difference file (I don't know if it's using AES-17 or not); anyway, the results are: -31.71 dB (L), -32.97 dB (R) – or -31.72 dB (L), -32. 98dB (R), after DC offset removal.

Hey, guys.

I’m looking at getting a 16 or 32 channel convertor to drive the ssl sigma.

It appears that the motu 16a scores high in these tests than the antelope Orion. Is that a big noticeable difference, also has the Orion 32+ been tested?

Cheers!

The test is very questionable, trust better your own ears or the usual measuring of SNR, etc ...

List of results updated with tests of Roland UA-25 by bezen4uk and of Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 2nd Gen by Susceptor.

DA-AD loops from this wav file evaluated by means of Audio DiffMaker.

'Difference' indicates RMS level figures measured in Wavelab from the difference file delivered by Audio DiffMaker.
'Difference*' indicates RMS level figures got from a difference file generated in Matlab after refining the time offset and gain figures provided by Audio DiffMaker in order to get the lowest difference level. Hence the 'Difference*' figures are lower than the 'Difference' figures.

Read also this about the test method.
See at the end of this post how to contribute to the test.

Unsynchronized mode. The DA and AD converters run each on its own clock. Measurement performed with sample rate drift correction activated in Audio DiffMaker and limited to the first half of the sample. Because the RMS level of this first half is 1 dB lower than the RMS level of the full-size sample, one must increase the difference RMS level figures by 1 dB for comparison with the synchronized mode.

For contributing to this test :
- download the test 2 x 44 kHz x 24 bit wav file (31 Mb),
- cable link the 2 DAC outputs to 2 ADC inputs,
- play back the test file to the DAC outputs and record from the ADC inputs,
- upload to mediafire or any other file sharing site the 2 x 44 kHz x 24 bit wav file from this recording and
- provide the download link here with information about ADC and DAC identities.
Your contribution is welcome even if your converter is already in the above list.
Thank you !

Here for the gear

Well, well ...

Hi everyone
I was looking for info about what could be my next interface and ended up reading these interesting data BUT as I'm not much of an audio "engineer", I'm not sure I understand all that clearly.

So here are a few questions, maybe more for gollumsluvslave who did the test on the Edirol UA-1000.
I'm surprised at the results which, if I understand correctly, are rather good for an interface which I had bought as a cheap 2nd hand solution for my homestudio. Since you (gollumsluvslave) are the only one to have posted results, are you sure of them ? No offense here, but for other devices results may vary from one tester to the other.
Another question : did you bypass the preamps ? If yes, how ?
Sorry if all this may seem too basic, but as I said I'm not a pro.

To all who would be kind enough to spare some time to answer, would you say that the RME FF400 is actually not as efficient as some of the Motu equipment (such as the 828 Mk2 which is quite outdated I would think) ? And is the Mk3 hybrid really not doing so well ?
Thanks for reading

The data presented in this thread is very questionable as nobody really understands what this software is really measuring and whether this data has any importance for real use cases of recording. Furthermore this software has never been kind of validated / certified for this use case here.

If I were you I would simply forget about it and look for other things that are more important for the selection of a recording interface.

the loopback measures frequency and phase response.
those are the two biggest factors in ranking. like 99 %. i would allow 1% for "error" and unknown variables.

Such as ? As a home studio owner I don't get the chance to try different products. Difficult to get an impression of what I would prefer.

Thanks for your answer in any case.

That is simply not true. You shouldn't be trashing the whole test just because you cant be bothered/arent capable of understanding how this works.

It would be nice to have the source code so we could check that the software is doing what it should but there dont seem to be any issues - the software does what the AES paper describes.

Its not only me who criticises this test. Nobody really understands how it works and what the relevance of this testresults for every day work with a recording interface is.

You would be a fool to base your purchase on these numbers, it makes no sense.

And the worst thing for me is, that it brings people with no real clue, who stumble over this thread by accident,
to wrong purchase decisions.

Again: You dont understand the test, I and plenty of others do. Any half-decent engineer should.

The test does what it says on the tin. Nobody is suggesting that it produces any qualitative measure, or how to interpret the results, or that people should base their purchasing decisions on it. The data is presented - interpret it how you like, or dont.

I think this is one of the problems, that most people regard it as a qualitative measure and interpret it how they like.

Why people put so many efforts into this, if its not about quality.
What you guys want to demonstrate with it ?

See post #1638 what happens, what is your answer to this posting ?

I don’t see how this is any different than any other thread here...(besides the fact that there are actual tests/measurements as opposed to just opinions)
What about the plugin threads w/the fanboys and the marketing etc...? (Or even hardware)
“This is the best x ever” says the bedroom beatmaker with enough posts to earn credibility with newbs and they think he knows what he is talking about just because he talks a lot.
Every time there’s something new it’s the best ever and there is nothing else like it...
Gimme a break...

I bought the ****ty old Motu out of curiosity (a while back) and it sucked...and I sold it for what I paid for it...life goes on and we live and learn.

I'll be dead before I get enough experience about all these gears.
But a little help, a little logic and deduction sometimes helped me get quicker to the point. As long as I can improve in what I'm doing.
If this forum can help ... good.
Now if you tell me that this thread is too complex for my level of experience to get any benefit from it, it's something clear that I can understand. (Not so dumb after all ?)
Most of all : no life at stake here. And thanks again for your time.

Gearslutz member cylens provided a wav file that is a copy of this file, the same one for all the tests reported here, said 'the original'. This copy was recorded by means of a Lynx Aurora 8 through two DA outputs linked by analog cables to two AD inputs. Left (L) and right (R) channels of this copy have RMS levels 0.1 dB lower than the RMS levels of the L and R channels of the original. Corr. Depth and Difference are figures measuring how close to the original is the copy after compensating for the time shift (delay) and the L and R level (gain) differences w.r.t. the original. The larger is Corr. Depth or the lower is Difference, the closer to the original is the copy according to their distance criteria. Corr. Depth is provided by Audio DiffMaker (ADM). It is unclear to me what it is exactly. ADM provides also a wav file that is the difference between the original and the gain and delay compensated copy. Difference L and R figures are the RMS levels of the L and R channels of this difference file. But delay and L and R gain figures provided by ADM are not accurate enough so that Difference figures be exact within 0.1 dB. Difference* figures are determined from more accurate delay and gains computation.

Thanks.
With all that would you consider that the Edirol UA-1000 tested by gollumsluvslave performs actually "better", i.e. with more fidelity, than those listed below (which I doubt) ? It is the first non-professional USB device of its type I believe and was marketed in early 2000s.

I can say only that the copy provided by gollumsluvslave gives a difference w.r.t to the original having lower RMS level than the copies at lower ranks. You can decide by yourself whether this translates audibly or not by listening to the copies after having applied gain corrections. For instance

Edirol UA-1000 copy provided by gollumsluvslave
0.2 dB (L), 0.2 dB (R) Corr Depth: 34,0 dB (L), 35,6 dB (R) Difference*: -54.4 dBFS (L), -55.7 dBFS (R)

Apogee PSX-100 copy provided by Winston Tones
0.8 dB (L), 0.8 dB (R) Difference*: -38.5 dBFS (L), -39.9dBFS (R)

For listening and comparing with the original apply 0.2 dB gain to gollumsluvslave file and 0.8 dB gain to Winston Tones file.
