Still can’t believe my ancient MOTU 2408mk3 is so high on this list!

If we’re submitting requests, I’ve been checking this list regularly to see if anyone tests the new MOTU 828es and/or the Antelope Discrete 8 I/Os. Those are the two interfaces in my sites. ...because both are USB and TB. I could use them now with USB and would have a leg up on the Thunderbolt future.

Does Antelope's new Orion Studio 2017 use the same ADDA as the Pure 2?

Totally. I prefer the sound of my FW Ensemble to my 2408mk3 despite the dif in the DiffMaker specs.

One of the weirder things about this list is how different converters are even when they're from the same manufacturer. Given the drastic difference in their specs it doesn't look like any of the Antelope interfaces use the same converters....another reason I'm hoping someone tests the new Discreet 8

Now I'm not here to contest those results as your results speak for themself.

I've worked extensively in the past with the MOTU 828 and the 2408.

Those 2 cards would be placed on some of the worst gear I've ever purchased.

What I can say on the other hand is that there's 1 of the card on that top 20 list that you put there that I currently own and I wouldnt change it for anything ....and thats the Pure2.

Well....maybe a Burl ....but thats another story.

So my question here is, why would , for example , to me, the Pure2 translate perfectly and the 2 MOTU were completely anemic ( Note that Ive mixed excellent album on those 2 ).

Why , even tho the BURL is not completely transparent, I'd choose it over 90% of the listed ADDA listed there ?

I also own a ID22 and this one as a very particular color that I love and the translation is more then excellent for its price range....but still, not in this list.

I'm asking for your point of view in total honnesty, I'm not here to debate....I have my own opinion about it but with all those research, you might have learned something and might have something to teach me about this ''most transparent converters'' list.

Same here. But I wouldn't really expect it to rank higher than the 16A. (Since the latter has better DAC)

List of results updated with tests of Lynx Aurora(n) by Mikathechou, Antelope Orion Studio Rev2017 by jeamsler and Apogee DA-16X and AD-16X by Todd Loomis.

DA-AD loops from this wav file evaluated by means of Audio DiffMaker.

'Difference' indicates RMS level figures measured in Wavelab from the difference file delivered by Audio DiffMaker.
'Difference*' indicates RMS level figures got from a difference file generated in Matlab after refining the time offset and gain figures provided by Audio DiffMaker in order to get the lowest difference level. Hence the 'Difference*' figures are lower than the 'Difference' figures.

My Apogee converters haven't been calibrated to exactly match... You can probably easily compensate to null.

So am I right in surmising the main missing ingredient in these tests is clocking? DA-AD loop removes the clock from the equation?

Yes. My 2408mk3 tests much higher than my Ensemble, but I don't think anyone would say the 2408mk3 "sounds better". Even so, now that I know about this thread, I'm reticent to buy a new I/O (I need one) that hasn't been tested, or has tested low.

Again the test shows nothing meaningful. The only thing it shows is that “some” combinations of DA and AD perform “better” (read end up closer) than others.
This doesn’t even need to be DA and AD on the same unit. Things like cabling, local RFI and power issues, different OS mixer settings, gain staging, all add to the mix of variables. You can not deduct any MEANINGFUL conclusion from the sampled units.
These tests only become meaningful if done in a controlled enviroment, under identical conditions, with identical levels.
Something as simple as having a power adapter connected to a laptop, or having a badly shielded USB cable already yield larger differences than 2 different sound cards.

Indeed. And to put the numbers people are reporting in context, a 0.05 dB difference in level means that you only get a correlation depth of -45 dB.

The software should correct any level difference but that is the context we are talking about.
