I too would try to dispute the validity of a test which placed my expensive mastering grade converter next to that of a Dell.

Hey guys I have been trying to understand all this which I still don't. However, if anyone can tell me the quality of the AD/DA of the Tascam UH-7000 vs Audient ID22 I will appreciate it. I just got a Tascam UH-7000 and the DA in it is WAY better than what I had with the Focusrite 2i2 and 18i20. I am able to hear major errors that were made when mixing on the focusrite converters. I was even able to hear some errors in commercial recordings as well. I wonder how they stack up against the Audient ID22 since I am looking to purchase it as my interface. I may even keep the Tascam UH-7000 just for mixing because it makes mixing easier.

There is a link to explanations at the beginning of the list of results.

Would you contribute to this the test with your TASCAM and Focusrite converters ?

There is already a Tascam UH-7000 file in the test results. I don't have the focusrite interface anymore. I'll try to do some test once I go on spring break.

Test of the Echo 2 by bezen4UK has been added.

AD-DA loops from this wav file evaluated by means of Audio DiffMaker.

'Difference' indicates RMS level figures measured in Wavelab from the difference file delivered by Audio DiffMaker.
'Difference*' indicates RMS level figures got from a difference file generated in Matlab after refining the time offset and gain figures provided by Audio DiffMaker in order to get the lowest difference level. Hence the 'Difference*' figures are lower than the 'Difference' figures.

Read also this about the test method.
See at the end of this post how to contribute to the test.

Unsynchronized mode. The DA and AD converters run each on its own clock. Measurement performed with sample rate drift correction activated in Audio DiffMaker and limited to the first half of the sample. Because the RMS level of this first half is 1 dB lower than the RMS level of the full-size sample, one must increase the difference RMS level figures by 1 dB for comparison with the synchronized mode.

For contributing to this test :
- download the test 2 x 44 kHz x 24 bit wav file (31 Mb),
- cable link the 2 DAC outputs to 2 ADC inputs,
- play back the test file to the DAC outputs and record from the ADC inputs,
- upload to mediafire or any other file sharing site the 2 x 44 kHz x 24 bit wav file from this recording and
- provide the download link here with information about ADC and DAC identities.
Your contribution is welcome even if your converter is already in the above list.
Thank you !

Bump. Looking forward to seeing the new Focusrite Clarett when it's released.

Also, has anyone used the Tascam US-1200? It's a dirt cheap USB interface and I'm curious how its conversion sounds, I'm in the need for some cheap AD/DA until I can save up for either a new MOTU or Ensemble.

Also excited to hear the new Audient id14 and the new Apollo 8. I'm still looking for the right interface... could be the MOTU 1248, the Ensemble 2, maybe the new Apollo, maybe the new id14. Since I really only need a great DI and solid AD/DA, the new Audient is mighty tempting (and affordable)!

I believe the Ensemble Thunderbolt has already been tested, but yes, I'm also looking forward to the new Apollo being tested

Anyone with a RME FF 802 care to participate?
Does anybody know if it has the same converters as the UFX?

Prism Lyra 1

Here is a file from a Prism Lyra 1 (output folded back to input)

https://app.box.com/s/yyxz55q5w6iwd7rp4b5mzatbyd61suy2

Now, I created this file via overdub feature on Audacity. Should I have utilized the record feature inside DiffMaker instead?

Tascam us-144 mkii

Earlier someone asked for a cheap A to D. Here you go.

TASCAM US-144 MKII looped into itself

https://app.box.com/s/00rf3ilx56fdt2g92pg328i0i8beuoa9

Once again, I created this via Audacity overdub. With this A to D, you have to manually set the line input levels of L and R channel

No. What you did is just perfect. Here's the measurement result:

Emotiva XDA-1 --> Prism Lyra One

The setup was Dig Out of Prism Lyra 1 into Dig In of Emotiva XDA-1, then analog out of Emotiva XDA-1 --> analog in of Prism Lyra 1.

I don't know if this is considered asynchronous or synchronous because I don't know what the Emotiva XDA-1 uses as a clock, it's own internal clock or some derivation of the digital input.

It is a synchronised test because the DA clock has to be slaved to the input digital stream. The polarity of your copy is reversed with respect to the original: it has been detected and corrected by Audio DiffMaker. Here's the measurement result
Audio DiffMaker: -251,2msec, 0,009dB (L), 0,034dB (R)..Corr Depth: 25,8 dB (L), 27,7 dB (R)

Tests of the Prism Lyra 1, Tascam US-144MKII and Emotiva XDA-1 by capn357 added.

Thank you !

Gear Nut
Not sure if you answered this already, but can you explain why some of these, like the motu 16A and the Symphony, have a lot better "Corr Depth" to "Difference" then some of the other converters in the same "Difference" range.

how exactly do you do this test? i have ross martin ad/dc i would like to try. do you match each pass? do you dither each pass? etc.

No I can't because I do not know how the correlated null depth from ADM is computed. The ranking is based on the RMS level of the difference file.

When this ranking is not consistent with the ranking according to the correlated null depth, which occurs only for a small part of the tests, I refine the gain and time delay corrections from ADM in Matlab and generate a new difference file in Matlab.

Matlab refining lowers the difference level generally by a small margin although it is quite significant for both your examples : the result from this extra computation for the MOTU 16A has been given here. For the Symphony, the parameters delivered by ADM are: -1sec, 0,042dB (L), 0,011dB (R)..Corr Depth: 43,4 dB (L), 45,6 dB (R), the level of the ADM difference wav file measued in Wavelab are: -45,9 dBFS (L), 45,5 dBFS dB (R), the prameters refined in Matlab are -1.0000128 s 0,0422dB (L), 0,009dB (R) Difference: -51,2 dBFS (L), 50,1 dBFS dB (R).

Did you check this link given at the beginning of the list of results ?

For the above, I get the follow results:

Parameters: 193usec, 0.123dB (L), 0.126dB (R)..Corr Depth: 30.2 dB (L), 31.8 dB (R)

Then from matlab, I get a difference* of -44.4341 -45.5866

Does that match your analysis?

Interesting, the difference* is slightly higher with the Apollo8 QUAD vs. the Apollo QUAD in your results, even with the 3db or so better ADC and DAC specifications with the Apollo8.

Hi kmr,

I have got the same ADM result. I guess that you used Matlab just for measuring the RMS level of the difference file provided by ADM ? I am doing this measurement in Wavelab.
Here's the result:
Audio DiffMaker:193usec, 0,123dB (L), 0,126dB (R)..Corr Depth: 30,2 dB (L), 31,8 dB (R) Difference: -44.7 dBFS (L), -45.9 dBFS (R)
Wavelab Difference: -44.7 dBFS (L), -45.9 dBFS (R)
Measuring the RMS level in Matlab gives the same result:
>> 10*log10(mean(abs(audioread('Original2_Apollo8-Original2.wav')).^2))

ans =

-44.6577 -45.8780

(In Wavelab, I disregard the initial 175 ms section of the ADM diffference file, which is always abnormally high, and I remove the DC offset, but this impacts by less than 0.1 dB in this case).

When the ranking of the test according to the correlated null depth is much different from the one according to the difference level, I use Matlab for refining the time delay and gain corrections so that to achieve minimum difference level. Here's the result:
Matlab 188.7 µs, 0.115 dB (R) 0.121 dB (L) Difference: -46.4 dBFS (L), -47.4 dBFS (R)

Tests of the Universal Audio 8 Quad by kmr added.

Thank you !

Thanks for the explanation. Yes, I'm used Matlab and wrote a small function to compute the difference. Do you use the Global Optimizer for find minimum difference by adjusting the time and amplitude offsets give by ADM?

No. I just perform an iterative search in the Matlab command window, starting from the time delay and gain values given by Audio DiffMaker.

For reproducibility of finding minimum difference, it may be worthwhile to use the Matlab Global Optimization Toolkit if you have that available. I looked at the manual for a minute and tried a simple optimizer to find the lowest sum of the L & R RMS differences.

For the Apollo 8 QUAD file that I sent you, I got these results

Matlab 189.2 µs, 0.126 dB (L), 0.128 dB (R) Difference: -46.4 (L), -47.7 (R)

This is close to your results that you reported from your manual command-line search:

Matlab 188.7 µs, 0.115 dB (R) 0.121 dB (L) Difference: -46.4 dBFS (L), -47.4 dBFS (R)

I'm sure there are more efficient ways to use the optimizer besides my quick hack.

I can't retrieve exactly your result :
>> Cop = audioread('Original2_Apollo8.wav');
>> Org = audioread('Original2.wav');
>> M = size(Org,1)

M =

5340666

>> T=size(Cop,1)

T =

5341184

>> N=T+100;
>> Cop = fft(Cop,N);
>> Cop = ifft(Cop.*repmat(exp(-1i*2*pi*[0:N/2-1,-N/2:-1]'/N*44100*189.2E-6),1,2),N);
>> Cop = repmat([10^(0.126/20),10^(0.128/20)],N,1).*Cop;
>> t_0=ceil(189.2E-6*44100)

t_0 =

9

>> 10*log10(mean(abs(Cop(t_0:M,1)-Org(t_0:M,1)-mean(Cop(t_0:M,1)-Org(t_0:M,1))).^2))

ans =

-46.3157

>> 10*log10(mean(abs(Cop(t_0:M,2)-Org(t_0:M,2)-mean(Cop(t_0:M,2)-Org(t_0:M,2))).^2))

ans =

-47.5314

So I find -46.3 (L) and -47.5 (R) with you time delay and gains values.

I minimize the largest RMS difference level of the left and right channel. This is quite an arbitrary choice and the sum of the L and R RMS difference levels, as you are proposing, is valuable too (although I would prefer the RMS level of the mono signal got by concatenating the L and R channels of the difference). Anyway this has negligible (if any) impact on the ranking of the test.
I have not got the Global Optimization Toolbox. It is certainly well suited to this application. Thank you for your advice !
