Gefells (M71S, M990, M930) + Horch RM2J on male vocal

A friend of mine visited me in the studio, so I asked him to sing a bit in the microphones that I have now here:

Here it is:

Gefell MT71s

Gefell M990

Gefell M930

Horch RM2J (red) 1

Horch RM2J (red) 2

Horch RM2J (blue)

Thanks for the samples, Ivo!

Hope you don't mind a total newbie weighing in. These takes are of particular interest as I have a Horch RM2J on order at the moment.

-MT71S sounds blissfully clear to my ears. Gotta add it to my wish list.
-Horch on Blue mode seems so (natural?). Could really hear the acoustic guitar.
-930 feels very sweet, nice and tight-ish
-990 offers similar appeal to the 930 but (bolder?)
-Horch on Red mode is very thick and (woody?)

Thanks to your friend for providing such an interesting A/B.

-Matt

Wow what a great shootout! Thank you very much.

I found that m930 quite natural sounding but Horch rm2J(red1) sounded even better. It has more bodys and sounds warm.

Edit:
No wonder its warm, it's a tube mics and prices are prety high.

Also, let me say that I really like your picture of all the mic's lines up. So much so that it is now my desktop background. What an awesome collection!

Is it wrong that this pic looks more enticing than a PB centerfold?

Thank you for sharing these samples, Ivo!

Very helpful since i'm wondering if i'm gonna upgrade to Gefell 990.

I've been comparing my TLM102 with Gefell m930 sample and I think TLM102 is in fact pretty good. I wouldn't say its better but definately can compete with each other IMHO. It sounds like TLM102 has different kind of highs and might have more lows but this might be due to my mic pre, distance to the mic and singer.

Just today someone came here and we tried M71S and then M990 and M990 sounded truly stunning .... I am very curious how it compares to UM 92.1 and UM 900 that I will have here next week ...

Thank you Ivo for sharing this. The MT71S and the Horch blue deliver both extreme sounds in this shoot-out from the sweetest to the clearest. You normalized the peak level, which results in significant RMS level (the one of importance for comparative listening), more than 2 dB between the M930 and the Horch blue. I could upload here your RMS level normalized tracks if you wish.

Thanks Ivo! I'm interested in the Gefells and to me the M990 seems to have more extended low end than the other 2, do you find this? Almost as if the singer was closer to the mic. I think possibly a vocal through the MT71 would sit beautifully in a dense mix and might suit my needs more.

Thanks for allowing me to hear my new favorite Gefell, MT71S. I'm a sucker for proximity and clarity.

thanks a lot for the samples! What a collection! I am very happy to hear that M990. That must be the most underrated mic of the collection, (and the "cheapest" Gefell tube mic). I don't understand why this mic is never mentionned.

thanks again,
Bram

It's always a good idea to use the Gearslutz MP3 file upload. So that the shootout files are archived forever.
