five cardio sd on guitar

Dear gearslutz,
I made a comparison of 5 sd cardio's":
Audio Technica at3031, Beyerdynamic mc 930, Line Audio CM3, Neumann KM 184 and Schoeps CMC5/Mk4.
I recorded a classical guitar at a distance of 1m50.
Pre-amp was: Line Audio 8mp, AD conversion RME Fireface 800.
What is your opinion (top 5?) of the mics?
Pieter

I listened to the first set. The takes sound close. However I might prefer slightly no. 4.

Thanks a lot for doing a "same performance" comparison. And for careful level matching. I'm nearly always frustrated when folks offer samples around here since they're nearly always different performances and therefore more different than the mics or other gear they're trying to compare.

I'm an old fogey with a tin ear, so it's not surprising that they all sound very similar to me. The first difference that jumps out at me is the difference in the character and volume of the noise at the beginning of the track.

#3 stands out as the most different to my ear, and it has the most problem with the string noise garble around 08:00. And a slight tilt toward the treble in the phrase at 17:821.

#4 is similar to #3 in its high frequency emphasis.

#5 sorta leans toward that camp as well.

The second note of that last phrase divides the samples into two groups. #1 and #2 render that note fairly darkly, the others give it a brighter character. #2 is a bit brighter than #1 at that point.

Unfortunately I'm listening on some pretty mediocre headphones since I'm on the road. But in this situation I prefer the sound that seems flatter to me, #1, with #2 next, and the others not so satisfying.

Thanks again,
Fran

I was also surprised how tiny the differences are.
The difference in price is huge: the most expensive costst 10x as much as the cheapest.

I did something similar with a collection that included Schoeps CMC64 and CAD M179, and while some might call the differences dramatic, I found them much less than I expected based on years of reading mic reviews in Gearslutz threads.

I have a pretty strong hunch that 90+ percent of mic auditions and comparisons I read about here are done without careful level matching, which means they're pointless and misleading. Too bad I spent 10 years and thousands of dollars before figuring this out <grin>.
