Three omni SDC paqirs on grand piano

Three omni SDC pairs on grand piano

This is a complement to a previous shootout with 6 cardio SDC pairs. Same Chopin nocturne, same piano, same room, same mics placement. Here the mics are omni.

Avenson STO-2,
DPA 4060,
Oktava MK-012 with omni cap.

Tell here your mind about them and I will tell you by PM who is who.

I like 7 best at least it seems to have the least noise. Hope it is the one I am planning to purchase!

Didier, Again you have done an outstanding job here.

#9 is too bright for my tast.

#7 and #8 are both fine; however I prefer#8 which is brighter than #7

Again, apprecite your key thru PM

Finally had a chance to take a listen.

First of all I prefer all the omnis over the six cardioids you made [or the the five cardioids actually, the subcardioid being between omni and card]

I think I preferred #9, sounded best, most balanced on both loudspeakers and headphones [not too bright for me].
#8 had some magic on loudspeakers, but I find it a little veiled in the lower regions [could be the Oktava]

I need to emphasize that there are pros and cons in every sample - to really judge these microphones would need much more varied material, microphone placements etc.
Still very interesting comparisons!

Mads, thank you for your listening and your report. You've got a PM.

Iโ€™d like to thank you again for the meticulously done high quality samples, which I find so much fun to listen to, and invaluable because now I know the characteristics of each mic presented here for my future purchase reference. The nice tones of your piano help tremendously too.

I am fairly new in audio recording and only do it occasionally (a couple of times a year for fun only), and do not have much of a mic collection but would like to expand it gradually. Your samples are the first that I found highly useful. The issues I often have with othersโ€™ samples are as follows:

(1) Saturated or otherwise compressed samples that muddy the characteristics of the mics;

(2) Recordings of narration that practically tell nothing about the mics because human (talking) voices have such narrow frequency bands (unless I get to compare the recording with the live person);

(3) Too much coloration from the room acoustics, etc.

By the way, PM me first when you are ready to sell your piano!

Thanks for the shootout.

I prefer 8 or 9. More detailed than 7. I think 8 has great imaging, and 9 has a very clear sparkle to it. 7 is somewhat gritty in comparison.

I just send to you the key.

Well the omnis are better than the cardiods in your other test.

I liked the 9.

Please PM the answer.

They all sound good, but I like 8 the best (clear and balanced), then 7 and 9 the least (a little to bright for me).

Please PM me the key.

Thank you!

8 is way out in front here...I'd be thrilled if it isn't the DPA as I already have the other two. I presume it is the DPA though.

8, 7, 9 is my preference. Thanks in advance for the key.

first thanks

otherwise for me
8 was the most precise , natural and open so i says dpa
9 more colored but not nasty so maybe oktava
and 7 a bit resonant ; not as detailed and deep thus maybe Avenson

about the dpa do you find them noisy? for room ambiance, far field,...I'm really interested
Old 13th December 2009
Check your PMs.

The self-noise from DPA 4060 is 23 dBA, which can be an issue only a very quiet source in a very quiet room. The Avenson noise is 5 dB higher.

9, 7, 8 in order of preference, listening on a laptop with headphones. 9 sounds especially dark, slightly distant and distinctly russian. looking forward to the key.
thanks !

nice piece, nice piano, nice playing !

Hi Didier.Brest,

I never received the key for this test. It might have gotten lost in cyberspace. When you get a chance, could you send it to me again, either e-mail or PM?

Thanks for this comparison - would love the answer key via PM!

The shame of it is was the jump in noise level for #8, which, for me, would make that one unusable. Would drive me nuts! Its a shame because I liked the tonal balance of 8 quite a bit, just that noise/hiss...........

8 noisiest, then 9, then 7?

Which, to your ears, sounds the most like the piano as you played it?

Overall, I'd probably take 9, sounds more open, but not too noisy. 7 didn't sound as good as 8 to my ears, but 8 was just too noisy.

(Did you ever close mic the piano with any of these? Just curious if the noise went away, or whether it was there even at low gain levels?)

Thanks for this audio file comparison. I much prefer file 8 since it sounds brighter yet smoother and more realistic than the other clips. Mic 7 and 8 sound pretty similar although I prefer 9 over file 7. So once again, to list my favorites.

1. Mic 8 is my favorite
2. Mic 9
3. Mic 7

Please pm me the key if you don't mind. Thanks again for the test.
