Blind Shootout with Microtech Gefell M930 and M930 Ts

I remember scraping the net for the longest time to find a useful comparison of the two. No luck.

And the shootouts here have been a great source of clarity for me,.

While I have both here, the M930 and the M930 Ts, I decided to have so me fun with the two.

I recorded some voiceover and singing.

The files come in pairs to compare, having recorded the same performance with both mics at the same angle and equidistant from the mouth.

The pop filter by Hakan was used.

The files were recorded at 24 bit and 48 khz.

Two mics A and B, two preamps 1 and 2.

The preamps used are the Great River Me-1nv, Grace 101, and the Babyface Pro.

Yes, one preamp was not used to evade bias, at least a little.

I'll reveal which is which in a few days.

The files will be here once the attachment manager starts to play along.

A is the M930 Ts
B is the M930

1 is the Great River Me-1nv
2 is the RME Babyface Pro

You picked the transformer.

However, the UMT70 has a different capsule than the M930.

I highly recommend the UMT70S. It being multipattern is very very handy. As the side of a M/S it's phenomenal. It has an incredible clarity.

I got mine to upgrade my AT4047 and AT4050 and it slays them. My Beyer MC930s are very nice, but the Gefell is that much better. It's not my last Gefell.

You'll need a shockmount for it. Per John Willett's advice on here I got the Rycote InVision with the attached pop filter. Very handy!

thanks for doing this test, I prefered the 930 without transformer, it sounds 'faster' and more transient rich which is what you would expect.

I have been cutting everything with a 930 since over a year. I had a neumann 249b available and hilariously is didn't sound as good on anything yet. Im running it into a Cranbourne Camden pre and through a shadow hills dual vandergraph. I can get everything from grace style ice sculpting audio to rich harmonic fuzzy gooey lovelyness.

This is deffinatly a contender for the first serious "all purpose" mic.
