Mic Pre Shootout: AMS 1073spx - BAE 1073mpf - Chandler TG2 - Prism Orpheus

In the spirit of giving back to the community, here's a little shootout I did recently...

The contenders:

- AMS 1073spx
- BAE 1073mpf
- Chandler TG2
- Prism Orpheus

Everything was split 4 ways through a passive split with the same cable lengths to ensure the same take. Everything mono, dry, no eq.

Drums are loops reamped through the pre's.
Bass is a Reddi through the pre's with or without a distortion pedal.
Guitars a Lazy J 20 with an Extinct Audio BM9 ribbon
Acoustics and Vocals with a Pearlman TM1

I did my best to level match the pre's. The volume may differ from one set to the other though. Feel free to fine tune in your DAW! "A" is always the same preamp etc.

Results in a couple of days?

Enjoy!

The A samples are always the same preamp? Or you shuffle the letters for each instrument?

I'm not in the studio, so listened through my DT770. I think A and D have similar colour, I would say they are the Neves. C is clearly the cleaner to me, so maybe the Prism. And B is a bit different, so the TG2.

Nice recording, btw.

Can you PM me the answers? Thanks.

Whew, not even going to guess on this one and all versions sound killer. I think b is smoothest in vocals. I bounce between b and c on bass, and b is probably my favorite on acoustic. What’s the acoustic chain btw? I could see all being great useable

Thanks for sharing!

Thank for this,

I would use B on vocals (doesn't have an unpleasant "background noise" like A), and prefer C on acoustic.

Can you PM the answers please?.

Daniel.

Thanks Nicolas!

Listened to all "1" samples and preferred "D" on everything. Was a bit disappointed to find it was the Prism!

The prism is super clean and the ADDA is stellar do not such a bad thing to prefer them considering the quality of it as a conversion unit as well as it’s super value as an 8 channel. I appreciate my unit best when making round trips.

He did a great job in matching the clean low level input to match the Prisms pre’s. I guess the whole point is that you could drive the other 3 to sound as saturated as you like to taste.

Great shootout! Thanks for doing this

Super interesting - I listened to the vox most closely and thought the BAE (B) sounded best for your voice by a good bit! I used both BAE and AMS (DPA) and preferred (and bought) the latter on my voice (with a U87ai). Might need to snag a used BAE for another colour!

Cheers!
