Large Hall Reverb shootout - Bricasti, Rev-X, Lex, TC

I recently grabbed an SPX-2000 and tested out the Rev-X verbs tonight. I am not aware of any shootouts with it, so here it is alongside M7, TC4000, Lex (plugins).

First, the dry input.

It's a shame the dry example isn't dryer. It would then be easier to compare the relative merits of each reverb.

This is a nice shootout. Thanks for doing this. The M7 sounded "cleanest" to me, but I prefer the Lex Hall or the Random Hall. I'm a sucker for the modulated tails on the Lexicon verbs.

Just to be sure, you used a hardware M7?

I have Phoenixverb, and I've stopped using it, once I got the LX480. For some reason, I found the Exponential a bit sterile .

OK, I found it in my 'retired' plugin folder

It's the Large Hall preset without any modification.

My pleasure. I'm lucky to able to afford some high end gear. Where I see gaps in simple and transparent shootouts, I try to fill the gap. Please join me in doing the same. GS is all too full of unbacked assertions, and has far too few good shootouts that lets an aspiring musician or engineer understand where to invest.

I think the Rev-X verb large halls hold up pretty well. They have a more 'ringy' tail than the M7, but seem much more realistic and natural to me than the 990 halls.

Thanks for the shootout!
From most "convincing" to most "funny" I'll rate these M7 -> LexRHall -> VSS4 -> LexHall -> Rev-X.
The ones I liked most were the M7 and the LexRHall, and I would probably use the M7 where I needed a most natural sounding rev and the LexRHall where I needed something a bit more exciting.
Quite curious to me though, since I had read that the LexRHall is supposed to be more colored and less realistic than the LexHall...

also worth checking out is the V2 Rich plate patch. It is definitely fits into that "more exciting" category. And it is SUPER versatile .

Stereo percussion test

I found this marimba sound, in particular, quite revealing as to the quality of the stereo reverb algorithm, and also the quality of the ER spikes, which can sound distorted in some algorithms (Valhalla, LX480, Rev5).

Yeah. For orchestral stuff and stereo inputs, the Bricasti is amazing. Valhalla Room is a joke in comparison - the verb just swings wide with the input.

That is indeed a great test clip that reveals a lot about the quality of the different reverb algorithms. I'm just working on version 2 of our Verberate plug-in that will include a new algorithm that we call "Vivid Hall". I've attached the results from the current beta.

Compared to the earlier version, Vivid Hall gets increasingly randomized towards the end of the reverb tail and offers better control over frequency dependent reverb times along with some other interesting features.

Best,
Stian
