AMS Neve 1073 Vs Soundskulptor MP573 with Mic&Mod U87

Hey!

After long hesitation, I finally decided to do a little shootout of these two preamps in comparison.

- The AMS Neve 1073 DPA: AMS Neve | 1073DPA
- The Soundskulptor MP573 DIY version: Sound Skulptor - MP573 : DIY Microphone Preamplifier, Class A Mic Pre, Vintage Transformer Preamp, Professional Audio Kits

I use this different gear, in DIY or brand unit:
- Mic&mod U87i DIY Kit: U87 DIY Kit | U87 Clone replica Kit | Mic & Mod
- Apogee Symphony I/O converter: Symphony I/O Support - Apogee Electronics
- SE Electronics RF Space: sE Electronics - RF SPACE

Some pictures of the configuration:

4 files, preamp A & B, vocal only (no eq, just a little bit of rvox from waves) and full (with acoustic guitar sample).

Vocal - Preamp A
Vocal - Preamp B
Full - Preamp A
Full - Preamp B

Your turn to play!

I'm sure both are fine, for the recorded material I like the A samples better, they sound more natural and balanced to me. The Vocal in the B samples sounds fatter, but in an unnatural way.
At least this is how it sounds through small desktop speakers (GENELEC 6010A)

Which is which, I have no clue?

Both are fine, but I prefer A samples, more balanced sound. And the Oscar goes to....

I own a mp573 and also I am very curious to know what are the preamplifiers relating to audio examples. Anyway I prefer the example B. seems to me that this is more linear and does not exceed in low frequencies (RME fireface uc and Dynaudio BM5A). This is also seen by comparing the loudness levels of the two examples at a time when the voice emits medium-low frequencies (around 15-16 second). Example A reaches a higher peak. But it is also true that this is subtlety, the two sounds are really very similar! for me :-)

I liked "B" samples better. Smoother, rounder, bigger. "A" samples a little gritty.

I agree with the characterizations of A and B, but I like B better. A is definitely more balanced and B is more hyped. They're both good - B makes the vocal jump out of the mix more, which I prefer, but I could see it the other way, too.

I have no idea which is which - I haven't worked with either of those preamps. Thanks for posting.

That mic is way too close to the reflection filter! it is coloring the mids of both takes!

Hey!
So let's go for the result:
A= MP573
B= AMS Neve 1073
To my ears, I prefer the soundskulptor preamp.
I recently test the Heritage Audio 1073... the sound is a little bit more brighter... but always, I prefer the DIY Kit :D

You prefer the Sound Skulptor to the Heritage Audio 1073? That's a big complement.

In the mix I prefer B which is the AMS Neve. It's got more 3D depth and clarity. And just pops out of the mix much more. It's also got a lot more air and is more hifi sounding.

Thanks for the shootout. I think the sound skulptor is nice, but I strongly prefer the Neve. I hear more focus, dynamics, harmonic richness.

Samples

Hi,

I would be very interested in the comparison, but the samples seem to be offline now. Could you please upload them once again or send them to me via email?

Best,
Waldemar
