Recording an album - Multiple sessions?

I was just wondering what everybody's thoughts were on using multiple sessions from different months, different rooms, and different gear to compile a rock based album.

Would it ruin the flow?

Should an Album as a whole be kept to recordings done with the same gear and environment?

Would mastering take care of different 'sounding' recordings and smooth them over into one whole sounding project?

*keep in mind all recordings would be of quality*

I don't think it would be a problem if it was the type of album where each song offers something a bit different, but even in that scenario the album would probably end up sounding a bit like a compilation, rather than a cohesive work.
