Well, they had six albums with Dave and 7 or 8 years of successful touring worth of momentum to build on ... it's speculation, but would Van Hagar have been as successful if the original Van Halen had never existed and the Sammy/Eddie lineup emerged for the first time in 1985?
I don't know if you remember, but #1 or not, and for better or for worse, VH with Dave were HUGE by the early to mid 80's. It was Eddie's/Alex's name on the band and, of course Eddie's guitar playing, but Dave was equally responsible.
