I've mixed The Whigs live a couple of times in DC. Great guys and good players with a lot of energy. I bet the next record will be smokin.

Thanks for all the useful info, Rob.

Studio I was at for 3 years in the late 90's replaced a MCI 500 with a Amek Hendrix. While the extra channels, Super Tru automation and low end 'sculpting' eq possibilities were all very big steps forward from the 500.... - it just didnt quite have the same mojo.. er.. 600..? er.. no idea.. If it has the same 3 band eq of a 500 series, then you may find yourself reaching for outboard anytime you want to get in to perform low end surgery if you are an SSL or modern Neve type of guy.... but again, I dunno for sure.. etc..

Found this for ya Rob... MCI JH428

yeah i liked them.
but id like them in addition.
i dont like self powered alone.
there is always some kind of limit protection going on.
i like having a power amp and that reservoir.
crank up and blow some **** up.
but i definitely liked them and thought they had great imaging.
sounded real good.

hi jules
thanks for the link.
the MCI seems to be a bit of an enigma.
from the research and conversing i've done, i've found
some people really like 'em, while others really dont.
at all.
not much middle ground.
and it doesnt seem to be specific to the 400, 500 or 600 series.
i've heard both praise and hatred for all of them.
they definitely seem to have their flavor.
its like Dr pepper.
some people really like it.
i think it tastes like shoe polish.
all this is so subjective.
i guess i was hoping for some tidbit of wisdom
but i should know better.
just gotta hear it.
anybody got an MCI in L.A.?

It's a sign from God that he doesn't want you to waste a ton of money on gear, or spend hours reading about it. J/K We all really appreciate you spending time to contribute to this forum I wish I had an answer for you. Did your wife put this site on the block list? Try clearing out your cache, history, etc. If you are using Internet Explorer, try adding this site to your safe list. If that doesn't work, try another browser like firefox and see if that makes a difference. Do you have any spyware/adaware/firewall/pop up blocking software on your computer? If so, maybe the site is being blocked by one of them. ~ Good luck

I still need to pick up at least one of these....

I can totally see the need to have the more open and the standard version I guess.

Have you tried the old shure 545?? if so, how does it compare to the tab-57?

I totally dig the sound of the 545 also..

Man this thread has been so informative and pretty damn interesting. I am actually in an audio engineering program down here in TX. I guess it's the new school way of doing things but it's great to hear old gear heads talk.

anyways Rob, if you're still around. I have to ask you a couple things about recording Elliott..

1) was their a specific miking technique you used for his guitars? what are your favorites??

2) what was the instrumentation for his string and/or orchestral arrangements? How many of each?

3) was his tracking order pretty standard or did it just depend on the song?

and,

what equipment would you recommend for a small home studio. I have pro-tools for basic tracking and what not. I also use MOTU Digital performer hooked up to a couple of rack synths, an mpc, and a yamaha motif. Do you like pro-tools?? I guess my music is mainly acoustic, with cello, and piano, and drums. Any Mic Suggestions??

thanks a lot for sharing all of these experiences and a lot of your little secrets!!
