I’ve had an RCA 86A since the 90s which is the last time it worked well. I had put it into my flight racks of gear I would travel with from studio to studio
And it was never happy after that.
It didn’t like moving.
Since then I’d occasionall Spend bunches of money On it trying to get it fixed.
Then shelving it.
It’s finally working.
Son of a bitch.
That thing is a transient smack down.
Sounds amazing on acoustics and bass.
I’m glad I held on to it and finally found the right tech to want to conquer that beast.
Go Matty DelVecchio!
He did real good on the Gates SA-20 as well.

since we aren't supposed to talk about gear...hows about this...

how great do drums sound when mic'd up through coil audio preamps ?

i'm kind of obsessed with getting a pair or 6 of these things...not for the gear...but for the drum sounds. and guitar sounds...and probably vocal sounds and maybe even tamborine.

everyone i know who i trust who has used these things has told me one thing: get them.

I'm loving mine!! (70's) Along with the Locomotive 286a's and WT(v)72's. Loving the euphonic tube vibe after a long stint with only Solid State pre's. There's room for both!!

You Bad Boy!
By the way, have you you used the new AEA KU5A much and what do you think? I do a lot of percussion here. Currently using Beyer 160’s and am wondering if the KU5 would raise the bar.

The only one I ever heard was kinda in the same "territory", but I thought it was a little "cleaner" before things hit the threshold, and a little "stiffer" above it.

(Then again, the was no Gates there to compare it with at the time, so...)

Here's the Collins schematic.

Are you sure that you have a Gates SA20?
The SA20 is an uber rare line amp, basically.

Don't you have a SA39 of some sort?

I picked up a super reverb from a friend for an affordable price.
It’s a 74 silverface.
Normal channel wasn’t working and it had 4 eminence bass speakers in it.
It’s what you call a project.
Normal channel was easy, just a bad plate resistor.
Went on to get rid of the bias balance and convert to bias adjust and while I was in there decided
To convert the phase inverter to blackface arrangement.
Got rid of some snubbing caps.
Revoiced the normal channel to more tweed Bassman values.
Rebiased the power tubes.
Swapped the speakers out for two Weber Alnicos and two WGS ceramics.
Sweet Jesus it sounds unbelievably good.
It is gonna be in the normal rotation.
Boom

For this super, the Veteran 10”
For the old Jensen sound I think the G12C is a great speaker and I swap those into new fenders. Those new Jensen’s are garbage.
For the celestion thing I’ve had great results with the Green Beret and Veteran 12s
One being a greenback style the other vintage30 style.

Enabler. Hard to resist the Elvis reference.
Found a minty local re10. Maybe should refoam these though.

Btw, this is pretty nice if one is in need of a good spring for gt/synths. I got it for an old bassman & Vibrochamp.
A pedal that controls 3 different tanks, gets here in 3 days from France & sounds as good as a fender stand alone ime.
For around $300. Anasounds element.

Weber 12F150 is a spectacular speaker in a fender. I mixed it with a V30 by accident and that's a great mixture. With my Showman.

The V30 helps it cut through the muck of a loud band. Also really like the Eminence Cannabis Rex with the Showman.

Just in case anyone else is speaker shopping.

Did the 15 dollar "tweed mod" on the normal channel of my blackface deluxe reverb as described on the Vintage Fender Amp Repair website. Became incredibly useful for fuzz pedals - muffs, germanium - all the pedals that usually sound horrific. Also the mod to get reverb and trem in the normal channel combined with the tweed mod is awesome...real link wray ****
