hey rob,

happy new year!

I saw you have the little papercones, are you mixing on them a lot, or it's just a from time to time reference thing?
since I got the ATC 45 I dont have space but also need for other speakers, but was always tempting by something like the auratones, and I have a chance to get the little paper tones, so iam wondering (also space wise they would fit )

and

did you tried in the end some of the mogaines that capi audio sells?

I really like those little papercones,
They have something to offer and reveal some truths
but I haven’t been mixing on them.
And I haven’t had the chance to try the mogaines yet.

I had to, due to the solid wood, mainly. The box builders realising how tricky it was to make them well kept pushing the previously agreed price of making them up, and I ended up going through 4 makers in the end. But also the amount of drivers I ended up just throwing away, and the time spent on matching good pairs. Between those two issues it pretty swiftly turned into jumping through hoops for totally free, so......not much choice in the end.

Hmmm...
Might you possibly be up to posting the diagrams/criteria for those of us in the DIY crowd?

Been asked a few times and always declined as I wasn't sure whether I would find a way to re-surrect it. But starting to think if that happens it would kind of be a completely new version anyway....let me sit on that for a night or two and I'll let you know. ;-)

Glad you still dig them. There is definitely something about a full range paper driver in a closed box. But then I am deeply biased.

There's also something about a full-range paper driver in a smarty-pants-math ported enclosure. And I am equally biased. :-)

...Well, I'm pretty sure that Uli hopes you'll decide not to spill the beans.

Yessir, and covered them with Christmas wrap slathered with Elmer's Glue-all.

And in this thread only, it's "pfunnels."

Yeah, like Uli would spit his Margarita all over that lovely porch over a little paper cone.

You make it sound sexual or something.

Maybe in your mind. Mine hasn't got the capacity for 'Uli' and 'sexual' simultaneously.

Have any of you tried the Crimson Blue sm57 handle? Seems like the white one it is basically a Mogaine amp in the handle instead of a transformer, but somehow 'tailored for vocals' as opposed to the white one......vaguely curious about this one....

I haven’t tried either of the transformerless models.
I have the orange transformer version.

Thumbs up to empirical labs customer service.
They just rehabbed one of my “vintage” Distressors.
It sounds good again.
And it has new knobs.

I just ordered one and am looking forward to messing around with it soon.

Did you get a yellow one too? Curious how subtle the differences are from stock.

Also what are your favorite uses for it? mostly snare/electric duties or anything more exotic?

I got a surprisingly good acoustic guitar track on a 57 a few days ago... another engineer I worked with got a killer banjo sound on a 57 too - makes me rethink bringing it back into more daily use after mostly ignoring them for more fancy mics.

When you try it you’ll hear it.
That’ll be better then me trying to put words to the sound.
I’m pretty sure I got the orange handle.
At least that’s what I said in the most recent post.
So I’m gonna go with that, unless I said something else earlier.
