over 50.
but I also changed all the op amps to red dots and Firlotte'..and changed out some other resistors and caps.
it was a journey of temporary madness.like real rabbit hole sh*t.I was determined to get it closer to 70's 2488 and less "modern" 1608.
BUT in the end it "transformed" the sound and gave me 6db more headroom on the mix.
My API guru Steiger saved my ass on the phone more than a few times.hot iron nervously shaking in my hand.
God bless that man.
I don't regret doing it now at all but I surely wouldn't do it again or recommend some else do it.
I'd just buy a new Daking console or something.

Ooh I’d subscribe to that other rabbit hole!

What’s the new Burl? I’ve got AD4 and BD8 in my mother ship.

Would be interested in thoughts on the forsell unit too if that’s included in your test sample?

the other 2 are the new fancy pants I'm comparing to.
someone let me try the forssell Mada thing a while back.it was good a bit sterile for what I was looking for.I landed in Burl world around that time.

API transformer legacy

The original output transformers for just about all manufacturers in the "old days" had one thing that was done to them that was unknown by most of the the manufacturers because they never specified it and the winders just always did it.

This was a process that used ribbon like wire, where all the 4 windings were wound at the same time, to save money and time. This is why when you take apart an old transformer, it looks so orderly. The funny part is that the laquer used to glue them together turned to powder and no one could figure out why they old transformers sounded good and the new ones had an 80KHz peak.

Around 1976, it appears that the ribbon wire either got very expensive or just went away, and since most manufacturers had never specked this, the transformers were from then on wound with the 4 winding from 4 spools of wire. This cause inconsistant wrapping and hence the peak in the HF, which extends into the audio band, making the transformer sound a bit brighter.

Around 1997, it was discovered and identified, and the experimenting began, with the result being a type of wire called LITZ wire, which is a group of 4 wires twisted together at some interval and then wound around the bobbin. This created the same effect as the ribbon wire and identical results.

That is why some of the newer things out there now, finally, sound like the older ones.

Many companies discovered this, as LITZ wire has been around since WWII and was developed, like everything else, by the Germans.

Many mic transformers used the ribbon wire and a lot of them sounded different in the late 70's for the same reason.

If I’m reading this right, it would seem that Paul Wolff was saying that at some point after ’97 API started winding their output transformers with Litz wire and they were as close as possible to the original. I don’t know if that’s changed since Paul sold the company. I don’t know why it would have.

At some point I’ll pull a new one apart and have a look.

I met the crimson audio guy at summer Namm and he really broke down his transformer thing for me.
Anyways fast forward two 3weeks ago, on of the stock 57 workhorses goes down.
So I decided to try one of those Crimson Audio handles.
Picked up the yellow transformer version and it sounds great.
Huge improvement over the original and yet another color from the tab mod.
Totally worth it.

The 176 is very cool.

Great on bass, acoustic guitar and vocals.

Also cool for distortion.

I think you would like it.

You and RB are fans of that Highland BG2, right?
I think that I saw that RB sold his Sta when he heard the BG2.

I've been on a vocal comp mission.
I love the vari mu vocal smash thing.
I have a Thermionic that does it pretty well, but it is very polite-sounding.

So good on ev-ery-thing.

It seriously makes me wonder why I bother with anything else.
