Maybe if you add a choke to it, a few Tungsol 12AX7's, and a few resistor changes, it may just mail itself home!

be warned for those of you that use a cracked version of waves.
they are coming around to studios under the guise of booking time
and checking out the computer rig to see what plug ins you have.
they see if you have the re authorizing program for reusing the demo version.
when they find that, you are screwed.
thy pop you for illegal download
piracy and penalties.
comes out to costing 4x's as much roughly.
ie the diamond bundle would cost $28k instead of $7k.
ethically speaking i'm not into stealing or piracy but
A) why is waves the only real crack for HD rigs and what has taken them so loong to fix it.
B)i wish waves would sell their product in a different way.
for example,
the diamond bundle will have 5 additional plugs over the platinum that i'll use and 90 that i wouldn't.
obviously not everybody feels the same about which plugs they'll use and not but why can't we have menu's to pick and choose.
UA kinda does that with they're vouchers.

Courtesy of Elliott Smith I got to hang out at Sunset Sound with Rob and Tom Rothrock for a week during the recording of XO. Two of the nicest guys in the world, who didn't have to be nice to "the moron that tracked some of Elliott's demos."

aww shucks larry.
hell those recordings sounded cool.
amity is awesome.
didn't we use some version of baby britain?
i can't remember anymore.
and you had that awesome little magazine that you were doing.
i loved that the very first time i read it.
were you there when we did the strings?
that was a rough day.
we definitely had the B team.
ther was one guy who was real good.
jerry goodman was the first violin.
he had been in mahvishnu orchestra.
i had been i huge fan of those first two mahvishnu records and there he was
playin in the double quartet getting pissed at everyone because they sucked.
ahhh the memories.....

yeah it was a total blast.
and more than a little bit strange considering
i hadn't played with a band for quite a few years by that point.
so to come out of "retirement" and play on SNL was a trip.
they really made you feel comfortable at SNL.
you had like two days of on set rehearsal between getting the sound and blocking it out etc.
by the time it was showtime it was pretty loose.
i do remember somebody clammed during the performance, getting off stage and everybody assumed it must've been me because i had the least amt of sealegs.
but it wasn't.
also on saturday night you do two shows.
a full dress rehearsal with an audience thats 2hrs long
and we did two songs.
then the live show that had skits cut out of it and elliott cut back to one song.
somewhere in the archive is a live version of baby britain.
i also remember they cut out the joke
"in the mexican border towns near Texas, LBJ was known to the mexican prostitutes as EL b.j."

Yeah, turned out Joanna Bolme tracked that but I got credited. Amity was a rocker. Odd snare sound somehow... we never figured out why but I'm sure it was the tuning!

Yeah, too bad it's still around spreading lies and gear lust...

I was there for that. Jerry was amazing. I remember a lot of the people complaining and then they couldn't get the bend part on "Cecelia/Amanda" right!

i heard they did alot of work to it.

V4 or V4B (the one with metal knobs pre-distortion channel)

Hey Rob,

Hope your well.

Hoping you could point me in the right direction regarding the purchase of either an ampeg v4 or v4b..

I have a VT-22 (with distortion knobs) which i want to sell inorder to get a v4b or v4...mainly so my band can use it live for bass... and secondly for recording guitar (and bass) in the studio...

My question is.. are the V4 and V4B the exact same minus the reverb switch in the v4b..

ideally i just want to get a V4B but they are hard to come by as there are alot more v4's on ebay...

either way, would really appreciate any knowledge you can share..

(still hunting for a gemini I... cant wait to get my hands on one and stick a weber in there..mmm...)

Take Care
chris

without looking at the schematic, that was the impression i was under.
the V4 started getting used for bass alot so they ripped out the reverb section.
and the V4B was born.
when you compare them side by side with an SVT, they don't have as much bottom
and obviously they distort sooner.
its a good sound though.
there are a couple of gemini's on ebay right now.
before you go putting in a weber check out the stock ceramic jensen in there.
they sound great.

cool thanks Rob.

I have been looking at pic's on the net of both the v4 and v4b...there is another difference i have noticed which is the v4B bass knob some sort of low or high pass filter switch on top of it (like the treble and midrange) on the bass... and someone told me on THE GEAR PAGE that the gain structures are a touch different between the two...

guess i'll wait for a nice v4b to pop up.. and if it doesnt already have it put 6550 tubes in for more headroom.

All the Gemini I's currently on their are too expensive... i missed one the other day by $2 ... it went for just over $300 US..

cheers for the info.

damn that was awhile ago.
the first record was cut in studio A at sunset sound factory.
so it was all API pre's obviously.
it was pretty standard fare mic wise.
57 top and bottom on the snare
i think we started with 421's and then ended up with 414's on the toms.
D112 inside the kick U195 outside.
royer stereo and 67's in the rooms
a hotrodded stephen paul 87 with innertube elctronics behind the kit.
overheads were possibly schoeps CMC5's.
certain elements met up with 1176's on their way to tape.
it was recorded to glorious 456.

winning days was recorded at bearsville in studio A.
this was a neve affair.
i think the set up is pretty similiar with the exception of adding a 451
along with the 57 on the top snare.
the room was very large so we put gobo's around the kit and a parachute over the top.
the large theatrical curtain was drawn cut back on some of the sonic bull****.
we had set up more mics out on the floor to exploit the room more.
pairs of 47's 67's coles and the stereo royer.
using different combos of the various mics depending on the song tempo space etc.
and again certain elements met up with 1176's on their way to tape.
i miss tape.
nothing like a razor blade and an edit block.......
