Hey Rob,

Are you saying that you use the smaller Stagers on drums more than the Coles?

I'm trying to talk myself into/out of buying a 4038....
I already have a pair of the smaller Stagers, but I haven't had a chance to use them, yet.

Also, by the way, I have a Samar VL37 for sale on Reverb, if anyone is interested.
It's an amazing mic, but just doesn't fit in my world.

Hmmm...
Where is the tearing hair out emoticon..

I’ll have to try that trick with amps, though.

Ahead of its time.
A very late quote, but i'm only just reading this thread for the first time! Great read!

Mellow Gold came out right when I was hungriest for music and it changed everything for me along with Weens Pure Guava. They showed what's possible creatively & blew away the era of over production & the idea of being your genre. It was a real huge moment in music that won't be repeated.

Can't believe Karl has a record from that time, been listening to it all last night and love it. Seems like it's a step between Mellow Gold & Odelay from a sampling standpoint, really cut & pasty with lots of dynamic turns. Thanks for putting me onto this!

Can you remember the 'electronic' set up you guys used for Mellow Gold? Samplers, synths, sequencer if any? Was it Karls idea to use the electronics, as his songs are the only real sampley kinda songs.

Yeah pure guava was awesome.
I remember going to see ween with Beck at jabberjaw, it was just Dean and Gene playing to tracks from a dat machine right before pure guava came out.
It was an awesome show.

I can’t really remember Karl’s set up that well.
He had that early roland digital 8track unit.
A half space roland effects unit I think it was an SE50.

I really can’t temember the sampler or the keys.
Some ensonique maybe, **** can’t remeber.
So yeah Karl was all the programmed sequenced stuff.
He had made a bunch of records with the ghetto boys and he had a great aesthetic.

I actually haven’t tried the smaller stager on drums.
But the SR-1 in front of the kit and the SR3 on top of the kit is great.
I’m not selling the 4038’s but
I really dig this sound these stagers bring.

Yeah, Ween came through Australia in 1993 as the last run of them at a 2 piece & DAT machine as Daisies was a hit here, and it was amazing. I recorded one but have lost the tape unfortunately. So loose and raw with a backing track, was pretty incredible. I kinda still prefer it to the full band.

Karl worked with the Ghetto Boys? Thats amazing!

Thanks for the reply!

The low end on the SR1 is amazing.
The SR3 is a real nice balance.
Also really like the AEA 44 over the coles.

The R44 is probably my favorite mic ever.

I'll have to live with the SR-2N for mono overhead.
I need the $ for some Overstayer action.

I've been using a Vanguard V44s stereo mic for stereo Room/OH
big picture-type.

I like being able to suck it in to a closer mono picture and then back to big stereo picture.
Back and forth.
It's a big room.

The Vanguard is really pretty nice.

I was going back and forth about getting a Coles or an M160 for the mono mic, but was thinking the pattern on the M160 might be too tight to get the whole kit without placing too high...

I like stereo overheads for the tight snap shot overview of the drums.
I like it stereo so there isn’t a big pile up in the center.
Rooms mics often don’t sound very stereo.
They sound big but nor stereo.
Sometimes I will make a matrix out of them to clear out room in the middle and pull back the center some
but as far stereo information on the kit I like it from overheads.
But hell thats just me

Probably not just you

Yeah, the farther I pull that stereo mic up, the less stereo it gets (as far as the kit goes).
There’s definitely a sweet spot.
Critical distance-ish.

The room I’ve been using is quite large.
Ceilings are about 20’.
I track everything live in the room, so that stereo mic is mostly drums, but a lot of guitar, too.
It’s a great sound, except for when it isn’t.
Hence the tight, dry, mono thing for contrast.
Not necessarily intended to be used with the big stereo room situation.
Maybe a little.

Thanks for the insight!
I really do appreciate it.
This is my favorite thread on gs.

Why not try stereo cardioid over heads.
Mono figure eight overhead in a live Room wouldn’t make me happy.
Maybe you’ll like em

I do like them, sometimes.
Whenever I record only one or the other, I inevitably wish I had whichever one that I didn't record for a song or two (or a section or two).

The room that I'm sort of married to now doesn't have a control room, so I'm forced to use headphones and a make-shift "in the round" situation.
In other words, it's not awfully useful for knowing what is going on 100%.

Maybe a M160 and a pair of Beyer MC930 (or similar) might be the way to go.
Then I would have all the options available come mix time.

Here's a picture from the last session.
You can't get an idea of how big the room is, but you get an idea of the ceiling hight.
I ended up just having the super high stereo mic for overs.
It worked out great for 60% of the material...
For one song, I really wish I had a better mono picture, so I had to take one side of the stereo mic and compress the snot out of it.
It's working ok.

Do you have a m160? Thoughts on it? I am really liking the m160 on lots of sources. Drums and acoustic guitars. I would be curious how the Stagers compare in vibe to a m160.

I dont have a Stager, but I love the M160.

Its great on electric guitars, acoustic guitar, organ, mandolin, banjo, upright bass.........

Excellent off axis rejection and it can handle a ton of SPL.

I love 160s.
Never thought to compare them with the stager as to me
they are different sort of tools from the outset.
The 160 is cardioid while the stager is figure eight.
