I remember those akai 12tr things didn’t sound very good.
I’m happy to not remember the DA-88 converter/adapter thingy....

When we bought the ADAM, we thought it sounded better than the (blackface) ADATs. (I still think it did.)

We realized our mistake upon hearing the DA-88, and bought one as soon as we could muster up the cash. (We bought two more of 'em within a couple of months.)

All of this came about because (although we had a 24track Otari MTR90) working with 2" tape was starting to get devilishly expensive at the time.

Be glad you didn't screw with that weird adapter thingy. I only ever saw one in action (at AirShow mastering in DC back in the mid-90s). It was awful!

Elliott reached out to me, I rounded up Tom and we headed to Portland.
So they already had a bunch of gear set up in a small house across the street from a bike shop and behind a 7-11 in Portland.
Otari 8 tr, two DA88’s a soundcraft ghost.
I remember they had some API and TLAudio can’t exactly remember what else.
I think we brought some mics like coles Beyers 834’s and an inner tube audio 87 maybe. Can’t exactly remember but some kind of condenser.
Maybe some more API stuff and compression like 525s an 1176 and/or Distressor.
I’m kinda guessing but these would’ve been the usual suspects.
I think I brought a couple of guitars (330 riviera12st Les paul?) plus whatever they had.
Neil was rocking the Gretsch Astrojet. Elliott had an epiphone Wilshire?
There was an Ampeg Gemini or reverb rocket.
Maybe a twin or pro.
Guitars were recorded w/a 57 in the kitchen.
Drums in the dining room vocals in either the dining room or kitchen and we were set up in the living room separated by giant
Foam gobo’s.
we were using the Otari input electronics as a front end before they hit the DA-88s to drive or color a bit.
I had a bunch of stomp boxes and an echoplex.
I specifically remember staying up all nite recording vocals for plain clothes man
w/Elliott and he was singing into the coles.
We mixed it at our studio in Humboldt on the classic Wally Heider Studio 4 API/Demideo
Mmmm something like that.....
yessssss! Thank you!

As to spark it back up on another lap, hopefully not getting annoying with the heavy Elliot Smithness....may I ask how you did the XO thing overdub order wise?

Elliot playing with drummer, keep drummer, overdub Elliot onto it after? Overdub drummer onto Elliot bed of guitars and vocals done to click? Different ways? Would be very interesting.....

Usually scratch gtr (an scratch vocal?) to a click
And then build from there.
Drums bass guitars piano etc etc
Unless it was a more piano based song then that would be first.
At least That’s how I remember it......

rob what kind of mixing gear did you use for the Cat Power vocal? On Wanderer.

I'm really curious what it takes to get a vocal sound like that.

Chan can sing.
That is the money right there.
The vocal chain was pultec distressor 1176.
Slap was echoplex.
A couple of different mics were used.
She sounded great on everything.
That girl can sing.
I said that twice....

To be honest, she is one of my favorite singers of all time and a big personal influence on me, so I'm not too surprised. I bet it's amazing to be there with here when she's laying it down.

Based on this thread I was catching up on Cat Power. When I see two mics being used creatively onstage, I like to learn more.

Does anyone have details on Cat's use of two mics onstage as in this video?

Cool, great performance!

From what I can tell, it seems like the second mic is bringing in a doubling/chorus/modulation effect, mostly on the chorus sections.

Tried the new AEA KU5A as a top snare mic.
That’s a cool new mic they got there.
Any one else try one yet?
Good meat and not dark.
Took eq naturally
Not spiky
Good rejection
I plan on getting one when I can afford it.

Placed my order and understand shipping is planned for Dec. Would have loved to demo but I have no doubt the mic is worth the price.

Pasadena is pretty close to my spot so something like that yeah.
Good question Hunter, I’m not sure how much it is.
Maybe I can’t even afford it.
Like the KU4A

It looks kinda like a new take on the BK-5??

At least they copied the inconvenient BK-5 mount... I wonder if my custom one would fit?

It is... it is. Even with a properly mounted BK-5, I was consistently frustrated with that god-damn mount that wouldn't let me place the mic where I wanted.

When Greg Wells purchased an OG BK-5, I designed a mount that would allow full 360 degree placement and had threads for a standard mic stand. I was tired of trying to gaff tape that thing in place.

I had 10 made and slightly overestimated the demand. Still a couple left...

Sorry to hijack.
