Rob, could you please elaborate on what is the influence a riser has on the drum sound?
Thanks

With a drum riser you have created a resonant space beneath drum kit which the kick drum can activate.
It sounds like the kick has a bigger wide open boom to it.
There are trade offs and it’s not good for everything.
But sure is cool when it works.....

I got to give props to Dave Allen of Allen amplification.
I bought a couple of amp kits from him 20yrs ago, which was what really got me started
Building stuff, and he still answers my emails about ideas and tweaks.
That’s incredible customer service.
And I really dig the amps.
An Accomplice and an Old Flame.
Very Fender Blackface.
Anyways
That

Rob, further to my question about Mock Tudor, you seem to really like the Smart C1. Is this typically your 2-bus comp of choice, and what do you tend to like in terms of ratio, attack/release? Obviously it's song dependant but it'd be great to get a sense of your typical settings and how hard you like to hit the thing in terms of gain reduction on a whole mix.

I own the Smart C1LA and haven't yet found anything better for pushing the audio out to what I call 'the four corners of the mix' (front right, back right, front left, back left) whilst gelling the works together.

I still use the C1 on the stereo buss.
Although now I have two stereo busses and that’s another story but anyways
Typical starting point for C1 is 4:1 ratio, auto release and fiddle with the attack depending
On what’s going on. But it seems to usually land on 1 or 3 those middle two settings.
I don’t slam it, just make it sound like a record and add some glue.
In other words if the meter hits 4 that’s a lot.
Last time I was at sunset sound, I used the C1LA and really dug it.
Those are cool.

Interesting that you favour the slightly faster attacks - I'll have to try the 1 and 3ms settings more often; I seem to live on 10 and 30ms myself.

The C1LA is a great update to the C1, though typically preferring fewer options rather than more I'd probably be just as happy with the original (I don't use the sidechain options on the C1LA, for instance).

Noise was certainly a biggy with my (original) level-ors, so any improvement there is a good thing.

Nice.

Noise is so bad on the originals it really limited what I could use them on. -14db less would open up a lot more opportunities for them!

Was that the main improvement for you? It would be enough for me, but are the other added features minor points?

Yeah new level-ors are a super solid upgrade.
All the good from the OG with additions and improvements.
Much quieter.
I love the low pass in crunch mode. Saves me from going to an eq which is what I always did.
And the 3rd release time is really useful.
I’m not getting rid of the old ones but I gotta get me one more new one for the pair.

And also daisy chaining levelers together for Di guitars is a real good sound.

the DIYRE EQP5 passive EQ module is sweet sounding.
Really smooth and natural.
I have the vintage setup with transformer and OpAmp.
Been using it a lot lately.
That is serious bang for the buck.

Nice, aren't they? I went a bit nuts and juggled some vintage filter caps into mine and got some really awesome tones, even without the transformer and just running old Signetics 5532's in there.

DIYRE EQP5 with vintage caps= SICKNESS

What opamp do you have in yours?

I love em. I’m running mine with the Rogue 5’s.

Thinking about grabbing the opto.

I'm starting to get the DIY Recording Equipment bug here too...

I was just thinking you could make a Colour with the Fostex smash compressor, the Distortastudio, (and a 3rd color of your choice)

and you basically just got a DIY Level-Or type of thing with independent knobs for compression and distortion!

At least that sounds like a good idea for me

I’m using the distorto right now on a mix.
I have the tone loc as well but wasn’t doing it for this particular application of destruction

In a mix not on a mix.
Using it to blow out a kick drum.
Very effective....

Here for the gear

Rob - Could you share any information on making Mic City Sons? What a masterpiece of a record. Neil's songs are amazing on this record! Any idea what types of guitars and amps were used? Microphones used on the guitars / amps? Compression ? Vocal Mic's? Etc ! Sounds beautiful.

That couldn't have been the kick drum on "Robbin Hood" could it have?

I don't know how record release works with time frames.

This new Cat Power stuff is fantastic.

Oh man hmmm.
Well they had started work on that record when Tony and Elliott had hit a philosphical impasse.
Elliott reached out to me, I rounded up Tom and we headed to Portland.
So they already had a bunch of gear set up in a small house across the street from a bike shop and behind a 7-11 in Portland.
Otari 8 tr, two DA88’s a soundcraft ghost.
I remember they had some API and TLAudio can’t exactly remember what else.
I think we brought some mics like coles Beyers 834’s and an inner tube audio 87 maybe. Can’t exactly remember but some kind of condenser.
Maybe some more API stuff and compression like 525s an 1176 and/or Distressor.
I’m kinda guessing but these would’ve been the usual suspects.
I think I brought a couple of guitars (330 riviera12st Les paul?) plus whatever they had.
Neil was rocking the Gretsch Astrojet. Elliott had an epiphone Wilshire?
There was an Ampeg Gemini or reverb rocket.
Maybe a twin or pro.
Guitars were recorded w/a 57 in the kitchen.
Drums in the dining room vocals in either the dining room or kitchen and we were set up in the living room separated by giant
Foam gobo’s.
we were using the Otari input electronics as a front end before they hit the DA-88s to drive or color a bit.
I had a bunch of stomp boxes and an echoplex.
I specifically remember staying up all nite recording vocals for plain clothes man
w/Elliott and he was singing into the coles.
We mixed it at our studio in Humboldt on the classic Wally Heider Studio 4 API/Demideo
Mmmm something like that.....

Oh yes, I remember.

...Which jogs my memory (what's left of it):

Remember that converter/adapter thingy that would allow one to put two tracks of 24bit high-sample-rate audio across the eight tracks?

Holy crap; what a PITA THAT damn thing was!

Worse yet, remember the Akai ADAM?

They were like 10 grand or something (for 12 tracks), and the studio I worked at bought one about a month before the DA-88 came out.
