Yep.

The lowly 635a also makes a pretty respectable "boundary mic".

I've always loved the 635a on acoustics.

And Rob, if you like the M267, you should definitely own a Banana Crusher. It's like a Level-Loc/Level-Or but with way more control. Based on the Shure SE30.

I can get you details if you want.

I can't get a lick of work done, following this thread....

Here for the gear

Hi Rob!

You described your Harbeths as a big brother of Proacs with expanded bottom. Why do you use them side by side? I ask because I'm considering buying another pair of studio 100 for home use. I love them in the studio, but sometimes I really miss some low octave. I'm not really a subwoofer guy, so maybe I should try those 7ES and save my proacs for music in home... love your work by the way!

I use them side by side because I still really like the proacs. The harbeths are perhaps more hifi but I'm so use to the middle of the proacs that I like the balances I get on them. The harbeths mids are a touch scooped or crossover freq is differentor the middle is arranged differently by comparison. Anyways they do different things and so I use them both and a pair of B&W 801's......

I don't have a 666, but I do have a 660 and I like it a lot inside a kick drum. It's also got a beautiful chrome finish.

I also agree a 635 omni can help an acoustic to sit in cool space in a mix. Funky hi hat sound etc.
(the RFT dm622 can be a cool omni as well though with a surprisingly sweet top end for a dynamic)

Always wanted to check out the 666. I understand they were often seen as an RCA 77 replacement back in the day.
See them on kik now and then.
Imagine they're more of 100 hz kinda thing in that context. Wanna hear.

Oh yes! Very cool mic. Omni dynamic with a classy, retro shine up top. Great on percussion and some acoustics.

@Rob

Just watched your studio tour with Warren, did you build the DIYRE and CAPI stuff yourself? JW

I built the DIYRe stuff and the CAPI VP26.
Those are pretty easy.
The other CAPI gear was already all together.

Thanks! I wasn't sure cause i can hardly hear any of the "tape" noise in there, they sound somewhat cleaner, very cinematic and lush, what gave it away for me was the sound coming to a halt/the ending of the loops. Really can't wait to hear the rest. Congratulations, it sounds wonderful.

So one is always on the drum buss and the other one is around for whatever seems to need it.
It's so good it kinda will work on anything really. Sounds really cool on gtrs, strings, backgrounds.
If I had a third one I'd use that one too.

Comparing well to rev D,F,Mohog and infratronic unit.
No A/B to original bluestripe yet.I think there's a little fairy dust in the old utcs. It's got that slightly harmonic hairy mid, upper mid push but nice slight smoothing over 5k.(handles sibilance elegantly)

Yeah, I did a record with nothing but 545s one time.

Don't do that!

It's like a 57, maybe a little sweeter top end. Depending on when you ask Shure, they will tell you it's a different voice coil material, but they seem to be confused about whether it's copper and a 57 is aluminum or vice versa. I'm not going to bust mine open....

If you're looking out for 635s, keep an eye open for RE50s too... it's basically the same mic, but the RE50 has a body designed to eliminate more resonance and handling noise. Really nice yin to a 57s yang.
