I was talking about the mini K47.
But I really like the mini K47. Definitely a useful mic in the closet.
Noted, thanks.

Rob .. Just watched the video today you did with Warren Huart. Really cool!

Even cooler was finally seeing your Mci 428b!

So much time and love must have gone into souping that bad boy up

As for your bad ass guitar collection I'll stop just there!

Although it could be a fet 47 in this picture.
The mic over the rim of the kick drum is a 67 and it's a general perspective mic.
It has a decent balance of the whole kit provided that the drummer plays with one.
It was compressed during tracking and depending on the song used to taste in mixing.
67 on the floor Tom.
251's overhead.
Tab xfrmr mod 57's top and bottom snare.
Stereo royer and a pair of 414's in x y in the room.
That's the general idea.
Probably was another couple mica out there but more flavors then heavy litters.
Hi Rob, thanks so much for keeping this thread going.

I'm about to do an album with a band that has a vibe that's similar to Tokyo Police Club, and I love the drum sound on "Champ". Regarding the gen perspective mic, it looks in the picture like you're angling it slightly toward the snare. Is that right?

Just listen to it and move it around in that area until you get a nice balance.
I've done it in that spot facing the top of the kick drum ie pointing at the floor and it sounded cool. Probably depends on the room and the drummer and witchcraft.
So don't be stuck on the picture, use the ears and let them tell you what to do.
Also, don't try to recreate anything, maximize what it's giving you. Don't chase what it isn't.
Boom

Hi Rob! 62 pages down and I can't be arsed to search out this entire thread. I know you've gotten some questions on this but...
Isolation Drills. Was listening tonight and Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez is this thing poppin' off!

Was there a trade secret 2 mix EQ / limiter across this record before it hit the mastering? Because it seriously slams.
I'd love to know but if you can't divulge that information then I can dig that.

Cheers, CMP

No secrets, just the tried and true.
Tracked on a Neve mixed on an API.
Studer24 Ampex456 2".
Used 1176/3A combo a lot while tracking.
Mix was compression to taste and Alan Smart C1/GML eq across the 2 buss
Then off to 1/4".
That was a real fun record to make.

I been into the color modules by DIYRe.
Really dig the Louder Than Liftoff pentode module in the CP5.
darkens and thickens in a very musical way.

Well out of the choices that we have now ATR
But I dont use it anymore.
Just not into the varying quality and the expense. Due to budgets these days I'd rather spend the money on time crafting a record then a storage medium.

I hear you. Every once in a while certain artists come along that inspire me to go all analog. It's kinda fun to be reminded that you don't even need a computer to record music. I feel that the process makes me think differently as well. But yeah.... budgets are an insult to the craft these days.

I guess because I came up on tape I still think that way.
The computer is now the tape machine. I still think about committing sounds to tape.
Making blends of Mics and bussing them together into one track.
The modern way of recording every mic separately for every source drives me crazy.
Anyways, I do miss tape editing. That was always fun......

Hi Rob,

long-time lurker, first time poster. After reading your enthusiasm here (and others' elsewhere) I finally managed to get a demo of an SFE at Superbooth in Berlin and am now a proud owner. Swapped out the Funky Junk gold can VCA compressor (fun little 500 series box with parallel and saturation) which was on my drum buss and put the SFE on and it sounds amazing - it could match the sound I already had, but then better it very quickly indeed.

First job is an album featuring the fab Stella Mozgowa on drums so some nice synergy there or something.

Did I read on here that you own two SFEs now? What is the other one doing?

thanks for all the great work and a super-fun thread.

Hey Ewan
Stella rules.
The two SFEs I have are slightly different from one another.
one is an early version minus an option or two.
So one is always on the drum buss and the other one is around for whatever seems to need it.
It's so good it kinda will work on anything really. Sounds really cool on gtrs, strings, backgrounds.
If I had a third one I'd use that one too.

The overstayer modular channel is a real amazing box.
Eq compression saturation with a mixer on the back end.

Hey Rob! are you using your Kick/Snare 1176s in parallel during mixing, or on the insert? Love the way your drums punch while still sitting in the mix. This is something I always struggle with! the insert feels a little too tame, parallel gets very punchy very fast

I dont always do the same thing it just kinda depends but
I usually have the overstayer SFE as the drum buss compressor which would be Kick Snare Toms.
Snare might be multed and paralleled. Gated and sent into an 1176 and a 550.
Regular snare w/550.
Overheads in drawmer 1969.
Something like that. Might take it further.

Rob, how hot are you coming into the MCI from pro tools (especially when working on music someone else recorded)?

Looking to keep those VUs around 0 or is it a free for all?
