Just wondering if you could shed some light on the acoustic guitar sound from the intro to Somebody That I Used to Know? It sounds quite unusual, very coloured, was there much processing, can you remember the mic(s)/position(s)? It sounds like there's a bit of DI in there too? Some of the high notes have a kind of stereo spread, is that an effect, it's not double tracked is it (or maybe a few notes were overdubbed)?

Thanks so much if you can help/remember!
Hmm, I suspect that it's live. two mics, one vocal one gtr. Then doubled live the same way. So the spread is kinda like take 1 vocal 20% right, gtr 100% left, take 2 the opposite.
Gives an interesting spread.
Anyways that's what I think it was. We did those acoustic songs while we were mixing.
Tom and I would tag team mixing and recording. I remember figure eight at that point was lots of elaborate arrangements and i was bugging elliott to do some simple direct stuff as it had none.
He started fiddling around with acoustic songs and realized he forgot how much he liked doing that stuff. All the touring and studio production made him forget about that side of things. Anyways
Like that......

Hey Rob, it was interesting to hear how you're cascading your mix busses. I knew you had the different busses, but didn't realize you were cascading them. Very cool. That's similar in concept to what Brad McGowan and I are doing on the Silver Bullet, only we're running API and Neve topologies. I'll try to see if we can shoot one down to you or drop one by when we get the production run going. I'd love to hear your take on it. It should be very soon..... bp
Yeah man sounds good !!!

Here for the gear
Hey Rob,

Thanks for all your insight, hugely appreciated.
As a small time bedroom studio musician, I'm quite illiterate towards a lot of what's going on here!
I'm just wondering what kind of effects were used on the backing vocals of 'Distorted Reality' on Basement.
Not sure if this came before you took the reins on this album or not, but any light shed on the treatment of this song in particular would be great, it's a masterpiece.

Anyway, thanks again from a huge fan!

Paul

About Kurt Vile: Could you please give away some more details about how the drums and guitars were recorded? I think it sounds fantastic!

Instruments, mics, preamps, process and studio...anything will be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Guitars are recorded with a Beyer 160 or modded 57 with the tab transfrmr.
Mic pres either MCI, Phoenix Audio, CAPI Heider Pre.
Compression 1176-Trakker.

Drums are usual suspects as mentioned probably some where in this thread.
Snare top and bottom 57's. Heider pres summed thru MCI,
Kick D112 U195 Heider pre summed thru MCI pultec
Toms 421's ampex AM-10 pre
OH C-48 Phoenix audio pre
HH AKG 224
1176 on kick and snare.
ME 1969 on over heads.
Overstayer SFE on drum buss
Various mic pres and eq.
At least that's how I remember it off the top of my head.
Also might have been MCI pres on kick and snare.
Anyways something like that.

It sounds as if there are both acoustic and electric guitars on both sides. Is that the case?

Hey Rob!! Long time fan here.
The almighty question: How hot are you printing your mixes now a days?

I find more often than not, I'm "working" my converters right up to their limit

Interesting, I don't find myself doing that.
Why do you, do you notice a difference?
I just get it in there good. Nice and solid but not slammed to the top

Honestly, it just sort of happens.

My converters are at -14 (If memory serves!) and once I get the levels right on the console, start adding some compressed channels in... levels usually wind up right there at the top. Backing down always seems to change the tone I've been working with.

Are you consciously avoiding the top?

no, i mean its in there pretty healthy but i dont do tons of stereo buss compression.
i use transformer saturation more.
but never the less there is still some dynamic range so i gotta leave some room......

Well **** bill, I like it to be about information not just info that comes from me. The more the merrier.
Is that what your silver bullet is all about?

I know rob...just trying to be polite and not hijack the thread. Yeah, it's the culmination of a long journey for me that started with consoles, then mic pre's now the SB....

Temporarily, yes. It's in storage right now. 120 input automated OrionX. I think I've mentioned in the past that we've moved, and at first, I was gung ho to build a new room, but I'm rethinking that as it won't really change my income and I've grown a bit tired of being "house rich' / "cash poor". (Not selling time anymore just music - and I can do that without building a new expensive room).
Soooooo.....at this point, I"m looking for a spot to put the console into where I can track, and working hybrid in a temporary mix room for the time being. I miss it, but I'm really enjoying not having the reflections.... Not sure how or where I'll end up, but I do miss the ol girl....

Thanks for the kind words Rob. After your descriptions above, it sounds kind of like how you're doing your 2 bus on the MCI. Similar at least - using cascaded saturation circuits Brad and I are excited. We've been in a fairly long prototyping scenario that looks like it's coming to a close, so.....hope to get r done very soon soon. :-)
