UAD stuff ain't cheap, that's for sure.

I don't have any UAD, but have been looking into it for a portable laptop solution. Seems to make sense with outboard DSP, and UAD gets high praise on the interweb. The good is that you're not using your computers DSP, the bad is that you gotta buy UAD's hardware DSP + their plugs.

If firewire is your game, probably the best deals are a used satellite on ebay...as some of them are loaded with extra plugs the owner purchased. They seem to go for around $500 for the quad core versions, which would get you started.
Though you might be able to borrow someones Apollo or Satellite to check them out?

I myself am looking at the new updated Apollos (blackface) for the portable laptop setup. The blackface versions have updated converters, but that shouldn't affect you if just using UAD plugs only. Plus the blackface Apollos are thunderbolt only.

Well if you bought some hardware and a few plugins and liked them and were willing to endorse them, I wonder what kind of compensation they offer endorsees. At least some free plugins, I'd think.

The hardware comes with some free plugs, but they are not their most revered plugs

Didn't you hear?

Andrew Scheps is 100% ITB, so a plugin is just as good.

You should be able to find a plate for not a ton of money, if not an EMT a Ecoplate especially out in LA.

FireWire should be fast enough for the UAD stuff, the reverbs and effects are what I like best from it and honestly you should be able to get an artist deal they are really great about that. If I can get one surely you can!

So oddly enough my hot rodded Mac from 2006 finally died this week.
Now maybe the uAD stuff is a possibility

This first single is the best-sounding track I've heard all year. Simply awesome work.

Did you track through the Burl or to tape? Either way, I'm blown away man.

saw microphone parts had a capsule upgrade for the AkG perception mics.
Picked up a pair of 200's for $99.
Swapped out the capsules for the 87 capsule they recommend.
Wow, really nice mic.
No more s***** top end.
Smooth.
Easy mod with good results.......

Well I got two stereo busses.
Stereo 1 990/Jensen
Stereo 2 neve marinar.
I think I have mentioned this before some where in this never ending thread.
I send the mix to both and then drive 1 into 2.
This causes the neve xfmrs to saturate and open up....
Anyways, smart C1 on Stereo1
If I need more I will use Adesigns Nail on Stereo 2.
Sometimes I just have the nail on and in without it really moving.
Just kinda barely touch it but it does something nice sonically.
Just really depends on the song and the vibe.
And I get a mix together first before I start engaging the compression.
I wanna do the work and get the details of the balances rather than just blast into compression, to me it's more refined balances that way.
Just one man's opinion.....

Hi Rob,

Just wondering if you could shed some light on the acoustic guitar sound from the intro to Somebody That I Used to Know? It sounds quite unusual, very coloured, was there much processing, can you remember the mic(s)/position(s)? It sounds like there's a bit of DI in there too? Some of the high notes have a kind of stereo spread, is that an effect, it's not double tracked is it (or maybe a few notes were overdubbed)?

Thanks so much if you can help/remember!

A wise man!

Hey Rob, it was interesting to hear how you're cascading your mix busses. I knew you had the different busses, but didn't realize you were cascading them. Very cool. That's similar in concept to what Brad McGowan and I are doing on the Silver Bullet, only we're running API and Neve topologies. I'll try to see if we can shoot one down to you or drop one by when we get the production run going. I'd love to hear your take on it. It should be very soon..... bp
