Mr Pine you are either far too kind or snowed in.
But if you really read closely you will see that its approximately
36 pages of the same answer.

I was rather wound up when I wrote that. I had just read too many ummm self serving threads, and was just happy to land back at an oasis of calm and reason. Almost was a thread end-er not a starter or a non starter.

Snow and extreme cold has been taking it's toll...or troll. Why did I leave CA after NAMM again? Why do I live in the Muddled West?
I've got to get out of mom's basement soon...

All I said re your amazing hosting, curating, and music making skills was spot on.

Best-
Jonathan

I dont know if anyone has ever tried the manley/langevin dual mono mic pre but i have an old from the 90's that has been put back into heavy service and i gotta say it sounds really good.
Vocals overheads acoustics so far.
I dont know if manley just bought the name or if its a similiar design but whatever it is
It is a really articulate great sounding mic pre.

Question for ya Rob!

How would you describe the sound of your 500 series Moog delay? I've got the 104M Moogerfooger unit on a permanent insert in Pro Tools. When I pull it up on vocals it's very very dark, I almost always EQ it to get it to pop out the way I need it to. However, when I'm tracking guitars/keys through it I don't really have this issue. But I have a DM3, Memory Man, etc etc for that stuff. I'm wondering if the 500 series Moog delay would be better suited as an insert.

Thanks!

*edit*

I should clarify, I understand analog delays are inherently darker than a digital delay/plugin. The Moog is just especially dark for an analog device.

Along the same lines, anyone using the Eventide 500 delay? I've found the Moog to be pretty dark. Can't find many user reviews on the Eventide.

Interesting.
My 500 series delay isnt working and hasnt been for quite awhile.
I need to send it back to moog for repair.
I always find myself darkening them to use for vocals so
Whether its a mooger fooger, memory man, echoplex.
Always roll top off them.
So the vocal doesnt get to spitty esssy....
So perhaps im not the man for this question.

It's a big bummer that the eventide 500 delay doesn't have any modulation

Mellow Gold is an easy top ten of all time album for me. Any memory of who had the idea to sample the Melvins Eggnog album for the song Beercan?

Yep it has a remote input that can be used for external lfo. It also has a send/return insert point for further possibilities.

Yep, and Truck Drivin Neighbours Downstairs will make me laugh and smile for the rest of this life every time I come across it again.

Mellow Gold is a PROPER record.

While I think Modern Guilt is a late career masterpiece, and Morning Phase is a pretty darn good record too, I wonder if Beck will ever be funny again on record.

Back to Rob, not sure if this was asked already: which piano at Abbey Road was used for Elliott Smith's In the Last and Found? I think I probably assumed it was the old Challen "Jangle Piano," but I think that one's been sold and I'm not sure if it's still at Abbey Road. Also, how was that one mic'd up?

I dont know the name of the piano but it was the upright with the lacquered hammers that had been there forever.
Funny thing was, it sounded so familiar to me when playing it. I never considered that it wouldve been the very same piano on all those beatles records.
But its on so many records as i realized wheni got home and explored the record collection.
Such an identifiable sound.
Weird.
Anyways, it wouldve been either km 54's across the hammers or a 67 if it was mono.
Very possibly Thru the emi pre's eq's and compressors.
As they had all sorts modules that were available to use and use we did.

Rob,

Thoroughly enjoyed your recent work on Kevin Devine's "Bulldozer" - the track "Safe" is especially heart breaking. Would it be inappropriate to ask what kind of slapback you guys used for the vocals on that cut? Or maybe a more ambiguous question- what is your go to unit for a slapback these days?

Wouldn't know where to begin praising you on your body of work- it's 100% essential for new jacks like myself who are trying to break into engineering indie rock bands.

I'm a Silverlake guy as well, hope to bump into you sometime!

Rob,

How do you interface the Echoplex EP3 in the studio? I've used the reverse DI box method, but it always leaves something to be desired, I think.

I've listened to Pretty Pimpin' from the new Kurt Vile record a few times and really dig the drum sound, and think the guitars sound cool too. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that you were working on this album. Anything you'd care to share, particularly around the drums?
