from my fading memory
no fancy mic techniques
57 and a 67 on a marshall 4x12 with vintage 30's.
might have been another cab with old greenbacks.
the V30's are brighter.
the old greenbacks are woodier and compress sooner.
console was API so those were the mic pre's.
LA3A 1176 distressors or some combo of that for gtr compression.
Amps that i remember were AC-50, KT-45, Marshall JMP, Sound City 50+, Selmer T+B 50, Mojave Coyote, AC-30
and i think some weirdo stuff that i made out of old PA heads.
les paul, old tele, guild starfire IV, gibson 330, epiphone riviera 12 st, dont remember what else.

Amd there was some real beautiful pastoral moments as well.
I saw this same show in Chicago a few weeks ago and it was fantastic.
Brian Blade was playing drums and it was one of the most inspired drum performances I have ever seen.
Truly special.

After the gig I got to hang out with Brian Blade and Lanois for a little while in the green room.
They were both really friendly.

I asked Lanois if he was manipulating Brian Blade's drums sounds (EQ, REVERB, ETC) during the performance.

He said, "Oh yes."

I had noticed that the EQ would change (sweep) during certain hi hat passages and at certain moments the toms or snare would have A LOT of reverb. Then it would dry up............... It was very effective.

Great show!

Ditto. Love those speakers Rob. Got a 16ohm mid 60's vintage one in a black face deluxe that Paul R modded for my wife in the mid 80's. Running an Emery Microbaby thru that speaker is like magic mojo syrup, with a dollop of heavy cream. The Deluxe sounds good with it too, but not as great as the lil emery. Never heard a guitar sound so smooooooth....

Isnt that the wrong impedeance for your deluxe?
But yeah i love the old greenbacks in fenders too.
Lately i have been really into the WGS G12C very (little doping) for that ceramic old jensen kinda vibe.
Like them way better then any new jensen(suck) and webers.
More bottom then the old jensens yet tighter sounding.
I have 3 of them now and just popped a G10 into the vibroverb.
Huge improvement over the ceramic weber that was in there.
The tonequest on every front never stops and Its always something.

Yeah, it absolutely is. But I bought it used and that's what was in it. The guy pulled one out of an old blown 4X12 marshall half stack and put it in the deluxe. Paul talked about putting in an EV (Black Widow?) like Carlton and Lukather were using at the time, but it was my wife's amp, and it was about as heavy as she wanted already, so we left the Celestion in and I'm SOOOO glad we did. It still gets plenty loud and it has a beautiful patina to the tone.

Ain't that the truth. It never ends, and art it seems is a very sharp two edged sword....

Hey Rob-
See if Clarence at ENAK will do it. He does amazing RCA work. If not- I've seen praise for Steve Sank's work on Beyers on this forum, but have never heard his work. I've got to look at some of these options for a M500 of mine...

Looking forward to seeing you next month!

Best-
Jonathan

PS Skybluerental [Anthony] above does amazing work, with an aesthetic not too far from yours, you guys would like each other.

You gotta try them out.
I'm mixing a record right now and the stereo field whatever is really bringing it.
It has made the drums come alive.
Crank into it some and get that classic FET distortion and then
You press the harmonics button in and it removes the nasty crack you get with fet distortion and just smooths eveything out.
Smooth exciting aggression.

Been eying the MAS for quite a while now but now ya got me thinking.
But a console re furb will thwart all desire for a while no doubt.

Unrelated but if you & others get a chance to hear the Foote P4, do so.
It's a mightly powerful buss comp of richness, depth & control.

Love the original OS fet comp. Snappy, crunchy, awesome upper midrange. A mainstay in mixes, alongside the OS Saturator.

Very psyched to check out the newer boxes.

mark fouxman is the man for the beyer 160 repair.
he is the only guy with the proper machine to make the corrugated ribbon
that is used in the 160.
Enak and Sank while both very reputable would apparently replace with a more RCA style.
so says Mr Joly.

Trying out the phoenix drs mic pre.
Interesting side by side with the 512.
More open, more of a smile curve to it.
Also capable of saturating nicely.
Can be very hifi but not sterile.
And then you cam drive the output transformer
For "colour".
Also tried out as line amps for bumping up a fostex A80 into protools.
Sounded great. Added a nice girth and maintained the top.

Dude, you are late to the party on the Phoenix DRS series!

It actually has more useful saturation characteristics than most preamps on the market. It rounds transients and adds some of that "hair" where others just square wave and sound like bad clipping.

Best of both worlds too with that transformerless input (detail, punch) and transformer output (size and smoothness).

Congrats on arriving!
